South Burlington - Daniel F. Burns, 87, of Wealthy Avenue in South Burlington died on July 18th, 2018 at Lago Vista, Texas, following a long illness. He successfully fought off cancer several times prior to finally succumbing to Parkinson's disease after 15 years. He was born in the year 1931 in Burlington, Vermont the son of Walter Burns and Eugene Lanctot Burns where he lived on Clymer Street as a child and teenager. He was a graduate of Burlington High School, class of 1949. He served briefly in the Vermont National Guard and was honorably discharged due to a bout with smallpox. On November 8th, 1952, he was married to Virginia Burns.

Daniel "Dan" Burns began his career as a Cost Accountant employed by General Electric who developed his career into a Cost Analyst and later a supporting Contract Negotiator for General Electric's military defense operations contracts with numerous military aircraft suppliers.

Dan was an avid skier until his mid sixties, often logging 60-80 days of skiing per year. For more than a dozen years he was an active member of the Bolton Valley Ski Patrol, and became the Assistant Ski Patrol Leader. As a first responder to skiing accidents, he was passionate about providing first aid and bringing injured people down the slopes by toboggan to the waiting emergency transport to the hospital. Dan was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his spouse of 66 years, Virginia Burns, son Jeff Burns, age 56, grandchildren Brendon Connor Burns, age 20, and Kristen Elyse Burns, age 18, brothers Brian Burns and David Burns, sister Theresa Burns Carp, cousin Johnny Burns, and several other relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was predeceased by his brother Jimmy Burns several years earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 14th, 2018 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, South Burlington.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made in his name to The National Ski Patrol, Lakewood, Colorado.
