Dr. Donald C. "Doc" Hunt

Middlebury - Dr. Donald C. "Doc" Hunt, long-time large animal veterinarian of Middlebury, VT, passed away on January 27, 2018, after a long battle with Lewy Body Disease, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

Don was born in Rochester, VT, on August 22, 1937 to John and Esther (Rhoades) Hunt. He grew up on a dairy farm in Rochester, after living for a few years during early childhood in the Adirondacks. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1955. He attended the University of Vermont and then Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1961. After working as a veterinarian in Randolph, VT, he served as an Army Captain in Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1962 to 1964, also working as a veterinarian. Following his service, he joined Dr. Ward Goss at the Middlebury Large and Small Animal Clinic, and eventually bought the large animal practice, establishing the Middlebury Large Animal Clinic. He retired in 2013.

Don was active in his community and passionate about agriculture. As part of his veterinary work, he was the veterinarian for the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, and was Vermont's foremost equine reproduction expert. He served as president of the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association, the Vermont Draft Horse Association, and Addison County Field Days, establishing the Draft Horse Show at the fair. He loved working with local 4-H clubs, and also was a member of the Vermont Beef Producers' Association and the Middlebury Lion's Club, as well as the Cornwall Congregational Church. He enjoyed raising draft horses, beef cows, and chickens. Don also loved trees and enjoyed teaching his children how to identify different species. He loved his work and his family.

Don is survived by his six children, Bonnie Hogan (Gregory) of Stow, MA, Patricia Hunt of Bristol, VT, Robert Hunt (Suzy) of West Addison, VT, Michelle Pierpont (Mort) of Leicester, VT, Emily Fuller (David) of Middlebury, VT, and Alison McKenney (Gregory) of Quechee, VT, his brother David (Ann) of Rochester, VT, and his foster brothers Jim Thompson (Joyce) of S. Royalton, VT, Ronald Burch (Karen) of Pelham, NH, and Gordon Burch (Gaye) of Randolph, VT. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Caitrin Alb (Hermann), Connor Hogan, Andrew Hogan (Kaitlyn), Gilson Hogan, John Hunt, Asa Hunt, Tia Hunt, Marlie Hunt, Sawyer Pierpont, Fraser Pierpont, Benjamin Fuller, and Peter Fuller, as well as great-grandsons Samuel and Jonas Alb, and many other family members who loved him. He was predeceased by his parents and his first ex-wife, Elizabeth Hunt of Middlebury, and is survived by his second ex-wife, Julia Harris of Middlebury.

Calling hours will be held at the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, located at 117 South Main Street Middlebury on Saturday, Feb.10th, 1-4 pm. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
