South Burlington - Gary Eugene Maleska died suddenly Thursday June 7, 2018 of a heart attack in his sleep at home. Born on July 4, 1950 in Hoboken, NJ, he was the son of the late Jean (Merletto) and Eugene T. Maleska. He grew up and attended schools in Cliffside Park, NJ, and Cresskill, NJ. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He was an aerospace engineer for Raytheon in Bedford, MA, and an engineer for Hewlett Packard. After moving to VT in 1987, he was employed by the US Postal Service, IBM, and SSTA. He also served as a substitute teacher for math & science in Franklin & Chittenden counties, a job he loved.

Throughout it all, Gary was known for his commitment to helping others and his great kindness.During his life, Gary had many interests and hobbies. Among them were rowing crew at Northeastern; extensive travel in his earlier years; carpentry; listening to music; playing pool, chess, cards and Scrabble; cooking; boating at his family's home on Cape Cod; and the Patriots. He had a gift for creating brain-teasers and math puzzles and for coming up with unusual inventions of every sort! He was proud to have earned his ham radio operator's license at a young age. He enjoyed everything related to robotics (for which he taught classes at IBM). He also loved his time in Montgomery VT, where he built two chalets and was a part-time resident for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Tyler-Maleska; his sister, Merryl Maleska Wilbur and her husband, Nathan of Newburyport, MA, as well as their son, Liam and his wife Allison; his mother-in-law, Terry Tyler and brother -in-law, Doug Tyler, both of Barre, VT; his sister-in-law, Debbie, and her former husband, Rich Robinson and their daughter Mackenzie, all of Rutland, VT; his brother-in-law and wife, Tim and Michelle Tyler of Lawrenceville, GA and their three children, Tara, Daniel, and Amanda, and their families; as well as many cousins and friends.At Gary's request he was cremated and there were no calling hours.

There will be a private celebration of his life at a future date, at the convenience of his family.Ready Cremation Society was in charge of the arrangements.
