John Lemkul Obituary
John Lemkul

Shelburne - John Lemkul died at age 90 with his daughter by his side on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at UVM Medical Center, having suffered from congestive heart failure for several years. He was born on January 22, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Otto and Else (Kapmeyer) Lemkul, who had each immigrated from Germany.

John knew from a young age that he wanted to become a Lutheran minister. He graduated from Concordia Collegiate Institute in Bronxville, NY (1948) and received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri (1954). While at the seminary, he met his future wife, Eunice Schrein, when he asked her to type his thesis. John was ordained in 1955. After the seminary, John taught at Concordia College in Oakland, California, and many of his students became lifelong friends. John and Eunice were married in 1956 in San Leandro, California and their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1959.

In 1960 the family moved to Queens Village, New York, where John served as a minister at Bethany Lutheran church until 1962. John then served as campus minister at University Lutheran in Toronto, Canada (1962 to 1967), and then finally at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover, New Hampshire (1967 to 1993), where he ministered to Dartmouth students and the Upper Valley community. John and Eunice retired to Wake Robin in 1994. In Shelburne, he continued to be active in church work and in many programs and activities at Wake Robin. He treasured the many friends he made in his 24 years at Wake Robin.

John loved to travel, and he and Eunice enjoyed many trips throughout the United States and Europe. Following Eunice' death in 2012, John and Elizabeth took several trips, including John's second visit to the Bachfest in Leipzig, Germany. John loved classical music of all sorts, but especially Bach. It was especially meaningful to hear Bach's organ and choral works in the Leipzig churches. At home in Shelburne, he was a frequent patron of the arts, enjoying almost all that Burlington has to offer (no jazz, blues, rock or country music, please.) For John, a perfect day included attending a live music performance, play, or the Met Opera performances screened at the Palace 9. And of course, a good glass of wine and the company of friends.

John is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Lemkul and her husband Jeff Raines, of Oakland, California. Services of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 Friday, November 30 at Wake Robin, and at 2:00 Saturday, December 1 at Ascension Lutheran Church in South Burlington.

The family wishes to extend gratitude for the excellent care John received at Wake Robin and UVM Medical Center.

Gifts in John's memory may be given to Ascension Lutheran Church, 95 Allen Road, South Burlington, VT 05403; Our Savior Lutheran Church and Student Center, 5 Summer Street, Hanover, NH 03755; Wake Robin, 200 Wake Robin Drive, Shelburne VT, 05482; Bread for the World, P.O.
