Patricia Ellen Kelley Stannard Obituary
Patricia Ellen Kelley Stannard

Burlington - Patricia Ellen Kelley Stannard died peacefully at The Converse Home in Burlington on May 13, 2019. Born in Burlington on February 20, 1924, she was the only surviving child of Miles and Beatrice Kelley, her younger sister Beverly having died in infancy. Patricia spent the whole of her life among her extended family in Burlington, Hinesburg, and Plattsburgh, NY, and was especially close to the Sorrell family of Burlington, with whom she lived while her parents travelled for her father's sales business. She spent many idyllic summer days with her Kelley cousins in Hinesburg, which, as she loved to remind us, "didn't even have a post office back then!" She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941, and received a degree from the Plattsburgh Business Institute in 1942. Pat married the love of her life, Henry Stannard, in 1947, and together they raised four children. In 1966, she went to work at The Vermont Transit Bus Company, where she worked as an administrative assistant until 1986. From the early 70s to the late 80s, she and Henry owned and operated Stannard's Market, also known as "Pat and Hank's," on North Champlain Street in Burlington. Pat was predeceased by father in 1974, her mother in 1983, and then by her beloved Henry in 2012. She leaves her four children, Daniel, Neil, Beverly (Martin) and Mary Bea (Healey), along with their spouses Anne Thompson, Gary Martin, and Michael Healey, and her former daughter-in-law, Virginia Umland. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her eight grandchildren, Geoffrey and Dwight Stannard; Tyler and Marc Stannard; and Matthew, Douglas, Rebecca and Gregory Healey. Pat was a firecracker to the very end, always up for a game, a road trip, or just a hamburger and fries at Al's. She was a much loved resident at The Converse Home, where she endeared herself to residents and staff alike with her spunk and take-no-prisoners attitude. In the days before she left us, she took an exercise class, competed at bingo, and played a mean hand of bridge. Family was everything to Pat, and we would like to humbly thank her wonderful "family" at The Converse Home for making her last few years as happy as they were.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 132 Main Street, Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday, May 20, 2019, at St John Vianney Catholic Church, 165 Hinesburg Road, South Burlington, with interment at Resurrection Park immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat's memory may be made to The Converse Home, 272 Church St, Burlington, 05401.
