Phyllis Woodbury Page Weinrich
Phyllis was born on January 8, 1927, and died on November 28, 2020, in Burlington, Vermont.
Phyllis had deep roots in Burlington and Waterville, Vermont. She was the granddaughter of Burlington mayor and Vermont governor Urban Woodbury and Paulina Woodbury. Her ancestors were among the first to settle in Waterville, where she later enjoyed many summers with family and friends.
She graduated from Burlington High School as valedictorian in 1944. She received undergraduate and masters degrees in Latin and Greek from the University of Vermont and a law degree from Boston University School of Law. When she was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1951, she was the 27th woman to do so. She practiced law in Burlington for a short time with her father, Guy Page Sr., and brother, Guy Page Jr. Her subsequent career plans to teach were put on hold by her decision to care for her father in his declining illness, and later for mother Mildred (Woodbury) Page, who had suffered a stroke. For both of her parents she was a loving caretaker until their deaths.
She married Francis Weinrich in 1973. Her years with Francis were among the happiest of her life. He died in 1986. Afterwards, she spent many winter months in Edenton, North Carolina. Her final years were spent at the Page family home in Malletts Bay, and in Burlington.
Phyllis enjoyed music and sang in the Vermont Choral Union, Burlington Oratorio Society, and St. Paul's Cathedral Choir. She had a talent for words, possessed a witty sense of humor, and loved a good conversation. One Christmas she wrote marvelous age-appropriate short stories for all seven members of her brother's family. The last of her Page generation, she kept her sharp memory and was a great source of interesting reminiscences about the family, her Waterville friends and neighbors, Vermont, and Northern League baseball of the 1930's. She never lost her astonishing wit or cheerful spirit. To those she loved Phyllis gave generously of attention and wisdom, expecting nothing in return.
She is survived by her niece Sarah Page, and nephews Joel, John, Daniel and Guy (III) Page, and their families. She also was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth; her brother, Guy, Jr.; and his wife Janet Clark Page.
A private burial was held at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington. Arrangements were in the care of the Ready Funeral Home. To send online condolences to her family please visit www.readyfuneral.com
