EDMUND GEORGE SUMNER JR. - BURLINGTON - Edmund George Sumner Jr., 85, passed away on June 28, 2014, at home, with his wife, Edna, and his children at his side. Born Nov. 25, 1928, in Burlington, he was the son of Edmund George Sumner Sr. and Sadie Jane Patnode. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He also worked for a number of years at the George Little Press, as a bindery foreman. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, and the VFW #782. His passions were fishing, woodworking, and going on bus trips. He volunteered at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, and would help anyone that he could. Edmund was predeceased by his first wife, Gwendolyn Gallison Sumner, on June 28, 1994. They were both born on the same month and date, and died on the same month and date, 20 years apart. They were married on July 4, 1949. He was also predeceased by his parents; sister, Wanda; brother, Leonard; three stepsisters; mother-in-law, Beulah Gallison; son-in-law, Steven Gilmond; and stepson, Robert Wilford. He is survived by his second wife, Edna Bessette Sumner; his children, Dennis Sumner (Mary) of Fletcher, Cheryl Gilmond of Rutland, and Lynette Pelsor (Joseph) of Milton; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Kathleen Duggan (James) of Milton. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Kim Towlsey of Richmond, Lisa Welch and friend, Rick, of Concord, N.C., and Kelly Wilford of St. Albans; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 No. Winooski Avenue, Burlington. The funeral will follow immediately at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be with his first wife, Gwen, at Lakeview Cemetery, immediately following the service. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors. Memorial donations may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
