RICHARD A. HARTER Obituary
RICHARD A. HARTER - WESTMORE - Richard A. Harter, 81, a lifelong summer resident at Willoughby Lake in Westmore, died March 12, 2012, in Hilton Head, S.C. He was born on Oct. 14, 1930. He was a legendary basketball coach, and was renowned for his hardnosed, tough-minded defense. He coached the Penn Quakers, the Oregon Ducks and Penn State at the college level, was assistant to Hall of Fame coaches, Chuck Daly, Jack Ramsay, Pat Riley and Larry Bird, and was the first head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. He also coached with the Boston Celtics, the 76ers and the Indiana Pacers. He retired in 2010, at age 79, after 57 years of coaching. Harter and his brother, Jack, owned and operated the Songadeewin of Keewaydin girls camp on Willoughby Lake, and he spent his summers during the off season at the lake after the camp closed. There will be a celebration of life memorial service Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Westmore Community Church, in Westmore. A reception will follow at the Westmore Fellowship Hall.
