ROSS THOMSON Obituary

ROSS DAVID THOMSON - BURLINGTON - Ross David Thomson died on Feb. 12, 2015, in the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, due to complications following lung cancer. He was 66. Ross was born on Sept. 21, 1948, in Detroit, Mich., to his parents, Foster and Ramona Thomson. His family moved to Arizona in 1963, where he lived on Meteor Crater while attending high school in Winslow. Ross graduated from Arizona State University in 1970, where he double-majored in math and economics. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1976. Ross taught Economics at the New School for Social Research for 15 years before becoming a Professor of Economics at the University of Vermont. He wrote and edited books and articles on technological change, and the development of Capitalism in the United States. He was very active at UVM. He created and directed the Integrated Social Sciences Program (ISSP), an inter- disciplinary program that engages socially conscious students by providing a broad view of problems that shape our world. His positions at UVM included Chair of the Economics Department, and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was a strong supporter of the faculty union, United Academics, and served as the Chief Negotiator from 2007 to 2008. Ross was a loving, affectionate person, and a strength to his family. He had a fierce, driving passion about what he believed in, and a kind and gentle demeanor. He loved to travel, cook food from a wide range of cultures, listen to jazz, and play cribbage. Ross was a positive spirit whose sense of humor could be counted on. He is survived by his wife, Floria; sister, Randall Casillas; son, Justin; granddaughter, Emeline; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be a memorial service held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at the Ira Allen Chapel at the University of Vermont. A scholarship for ISSP students is being created in his name. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the University of Vermont Foundation, adding a memo saying, "Economics Fund - Ross Thomson."

I too am saddened to hear of Ross's passing. I knew Ross as a young man at Winslow High School and ASU. He was kind, compassionate, and truly a remarkable man.

I am so saddened to lose one of my best friends. From Winslow High, to rooming together at ASU, to rooming together after I left school, to visiting Ross and Floria in New Haven and Vermont, to Ross and Floria visiting us in Arizona and to keeping in touch through the years. Nelda and I found Ross and Floria some of the most down to earth people we know. His friendship, spirit and smile will surly be missed by his friends, family and students. To Floria and Justin, may your sorrow be replaced by the good memories of his wonderful life.

All our love to Ross' beautiful family. What a tragic loss. We have such wonderful memories of him enjoying life, friends and family - New Years, Nowruz (sp?), his new grandchild. . . . . We hope you will take great comfort in knowing what a full life he led, and how he enriched the lives of those he came in contact with. He will live on through all the lives he touched. With love and condolences, Meryl & Gerry Kaynard/ Wall

I am very saddened by Ross' death. I was administrative assistant in Economics when Ross became Chair. He was one of the most supportive and considerate people I have ever worked for. My prayers are with his family.

I knew Ross in Graduate School at Yale, a sweeter and more gentle soul was hard to imagine. Later in our careers I discovered he was a hard-working, meticulous and erudite scholar. Sic transit gloria mundi.

I was so saddened to hear about Ross's passing. I will miss all of his wonderful stories about growing up in Arizona and, of course, his cooking. He was such a happy guy; always a smile on his face. I'm sure he's fighting for peace and justice for all of us in the great beyond. Rest in peace Ross. We miss you!

I am so saddened by Ross' untimely passing. He was such a cheerful and wonderfully upbeat soul. I can't
count the number of times that Ross
was able to bring a smile to me during our multiple encounters in the corridors of the Old Mill.

Some of Ross' early research touched upon the shoe industry in my hometown of Lynn, Mass. where my great-grand
father was a shoemaker. I learned much of what my ancestor's life must have been like from insightful talks with Ross. He was such a sharing scholar.

We at UVM are sadly diminished by the loss of his sage counsel, equanimity, and kindly presence.
