Obituary Condolences

Jane Duxbury

Age: 53 • Burlington, VT

Jane Duxbury, age 53, died January 19 in Burlington, Vermont of ovarian cancer. Jane was born and raised in Manchester, England, where she excelled in cycling and other sports. In her teens, she traveled the Orient Express from China to Russia. She was a talented musician, playing ukulele, trombone, accordion, flugelhorn, trumpet, and congas, and could pick up most instruments and play a tune. She played percussion and horns as a street musician throughout the UK and Europe.

She visited the US often, returning almost annually for the Michigan Womyns Music Festival. She moved to the United States -- temporarily, she thought -- in the mid-1990s, and settled in San Francisco in 1996 to be with her then partner, Chloe Ohme. They completed their family with their son, Dashiell.

Jane received her undergraduate degree from San Francisco State. She moved to Burlington in 2005 to complete her master's in geology at the University of Vermont, specializing in hydrology. In Burlington she was a member of the samba street band Sambatucada. She moved to Providence, Rhode Island in 2008 for a consultant position at Ransom Environmental. She returned to Burlington to be with her family during her last months.

Jane was adept at making friends wherever she went. She touched many others with her kindness, support and wit. She had a unique but appealing style of dress, and her clothes led friends to nickname her Fancy Pants.

Along with her son and former partner she is survived by her siblings, Susan Duxbury (Martin); Martin Duxbury (Susan) of North Wales; Peter Duxbury (Mel) and Mandy Duxbury (Malcolm) of Manchester, England; Caroline Hall (the late Matt Fox) of London; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her mother, Joyce Duxbury, and step-father, Cyril Duxbury, of Manchester.

A celebration of Jane's life will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society at 152 Pearl St. in Burlington on January 23 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Donations will be graciously accepted for Dashiell Duxbury's college fund. Please make checks payable to Dashiell Duxbury, PO Box 3382, Burlington, VT 05408.
