Andrew Grebely

GREBELY, Andrew Louis December 31, 1952 - June 20, 2011 The world lost a brilliant mind and a generous soul when Andrew passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the age of 58 years. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Andrew immigrated to Canada in 1956 with his family, and lived in Calgary, although he worked on every continent except Australia. He was an entrepreneur at heart, and founded and ran Pacific West Canadian Transportation Ltd., excelling in moving over-dimensional loads from one part of the world to another. Health issues forced him to retire in 1993, but he never really stopped working. He constantly had a project underway ranging from movie producing to writing software to stock trading. Although he faced many health issues in the last several years, he did so with grace and dignity. He used every challenge as a new opportunity to learn and/or teach others. Andrew is now free from pain and is smiling his brilliant smile down on his friends and family. Andrew is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Cynthia (Van Boven-deVries); his mother Helen Grebely; his special friend and brother, Joe and his incredible and much loved sister-in-law, Lucy Grebely; his nephew Jason and niece Nicole Grebely; his sisters Val (Joe) Dobos, Helen (Joe) Keskeny; his brother Frank Grebely and his niece Jennifer Dobos (Zac). He is also survived by Cynthia's family; parents John and Jeanette Van Boven; sister Karen (Sid) Olivier and their children Megan (Joel), Andrew and Chris; brother Greg (Teresa) Van Boven and their children, Alicia and Ryan; sister Elaine (Karl) Bomhof and their children, Sarah, Ethan and Jenna and sister Monique (Richard) Wagner and their children Nathan and Lauren. He was also blessed with many friends, both in Calgary and in far off places, most notably Jean Grebely. Also missing him is his beloved dog, Zoe. Andrew was predeceased by his father Andras Grebely, and his special friend Judith Butterfield. There will be a viewing at EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES (5502 - 2 Street S.W./one block east of Macleod Trail on 53 Avenue S.W.) on Sunday, June 26, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Andrew's life will be held at Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church (3020 - 51 Street S.W.) on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Andrew may be made directly to Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church - Community Food Bank (3020 - 51 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T3E 6S7).
