Bruce Meldrum Buchanan, June 5, 1968 - June 2, 2017.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Bruce Buchanan announces his sudden passing on Friday June 2nd, 2017 at the age of 48. Bruce died as a result of depression, after successfully managing bouts with the disease for many years.

Bruce was a devoted husband to his soul mate, Nicola. His greatest joy and gift to the world was his daughters, Emily and Meg. His bond with school friends was strong and he equally cherished the new friends he met along the way. He will be remembered fondly for his love of games, music and literature and was always the first to join in a game with his nieces and nephews. Bruce had a passion for golf and enjoyed fishing and camping during the summer months. He will be dearly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Bruce was born and raised in Edmonton where he became an exceptional student and athlete, excelling in English and playing both soccer and hockey at a competitive level. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education degree, and later completed a Master's degree in Education while teaching and working as principal for Rundle College in Calgary. While at Rundle, he coached the senior high school boy's volleyball team for many successful seasons and influenced the lives and trajectory of many young students. Bruce leaves us with a legacy of learning, and the fostering of community.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife Nicola, as well as his cherished daughters, Emily and Meg, brothers Ian (Cindy) and Rob, sister Carolyn (John), and father David. A loving and devoted extended family includes mother-in-law Rita, sister-in-law Michelle, brother-in-laws Jim and Michael, and many nieces, nephews, and a grandniece.

A memorial will be held for family and friends on Monday June 12th that 2pm at River Park Church, 3818 14A St. SW Calgary. A subsequent Celebration of Life for all students, staff, parents and alumni will be held at Rundle College (7375 17th Ave SW) at 6:30 pm on June 13.t.h

Some of the consequences of Bruce's death are still unknown. A trust fund has been established to support the family through this time. For donation instructions to the trust held at ATB please email buchananfamily08@gmail.com

There are educators and there are teachers. Bruce was both. He was a man of passion and intellect. He was caring and calm and he was he was the face of Rundle Junior High. His legacy and his love for the school will be felt forever in the students lives he impacted. He was a coach, a mentor and a leader who touched the lives of so many. In a building of intensity, he was the calm and the hope for those, adults and students, who looked for a leader who was inspiring and caring.
My heart goes out to Nicola, Meg and Emily. The love your dad had for you was witnessed in every act and every word he shared with and about you. He beamed at your success and applauded your efforts in school, sport and life.
This loss has hit all of you and it has impacted a village, community, a city and the nation, as people reach out to share the impact so many.
There will never be enough words to express show very sorry we are for your loss and to take way the pain. But know that you are all loved and that his spirit has touched thousands of lives.
In our prayers and our thoughts.

Dearest Nicola and family,

We carry this burden with you and will always remember Bruce in our hearts. He was the perfect head of Junior High School. Feared just enough to be effective and knew how to address the many different situations one faces in that role. He had a positive impact on our two girls during their time at Rundle. Taken from our world too soon.

Our deepest condoléances.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Mr. Buchanan was a wonderful teacher. He challenged us to do our best, and he backed that up with such genuine encouragement and investment in our education and well being. His kindness and dedication made such a difference in my high school years, and I'm heartbroken to learn that he had been struggling with depression. I'm thinking of your family and wishing you moments of peace and loving memories.

Dear Nicola,

I'm so sorry to hear about Bruce, and very sad to think how much he must have been suffering. I remember him from junior high and high school as being a genuinely good guy and fine, kind person.

May all the memories of the joy and good times you have shared, help to carry you and your families through this and to soften your sadness.

My deepest condolences for the Buchanan family, Nicola, Emily and Meg. Mr Buchanan was a man that definded Rundle for me. He was always a smiling face in and around the hallways, never failed to help out a student when needed and always worked his hardest everyday. I remember my first math test in grade 7, he approached me at my locker and congratulated me for my great work. It made Rundle feel like a close community when he had already known my name within the first few days of my Rundle journey. Rest In Peace❤

My heart broke for your family when I read about the passing of Mr. Buchanan as a result of his struggle with the disease of depression. I just lost my mom to depression two months ago.

During my time at Rundle College, Mr. Buchanan went totally out of his way by spending several extra lunch hours with me working on my reading comprehension skills for several months prior to the diploma exam. He made my weakest subject enjoyable and helped me to succeed. He was a memorable teacher.

My sincere condolences to your family. Take care of yourselves.

I am overwhelmed with how it makes my heart ache to hear that Bruce is gone. It is a tragedy and awful to imagine that his misery felt insurmountable.

I wish to send heartfelt condolences to the Buchanan and Spencer families. I am so sorry for the profound loss Nicola and her daughters are feeling now. Bruce must have been a great father, husband and teacher. I hope you find some comfort in the fact that he will always endure in the legacy of the girls. I hope that in time your happy memories with him will help the pain subside.

I remember Bruce as a kind, witty, funny and sweet person. We went to school together since elementary and I feel fortunate to have so many fond memories of a bunch of us spending time during the carefree days of youth. For me, he will always be a bright light in those memories.

It is so painfully heartbreaking to say goodbye. For him to leave so young, I feel inadequate to describe the depth of loss to the world.

Bruce, you are a gentle soul and will be forever missed by all who knew you.

I can't remember the last time I saw Bruce, he was probably only about 12 years old at the time. But I always had some idea of how his life was progressing due to regular contact with my friend Ian, one of Bruce's brothers.

I was impressed that Bruce chose teaching as a profession. It indicated to me a desire to help others, to give something back to the community, and from the many messages I've read in this guest book, it's clear that that is exactly what he did. His teaching, coaching and mentorship touched and enriched the lives of many others. The fact that he was able to do this, while coping with depression, speaks to the strength of his character and the size of his heart.

My sincerest condolences to all of Bruce's family and friends. May his spirit live on though all of you.

Dear Nicola and family,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've not seen Bruce since high school, but I do remember our times in various classes and particularly sitting together in English. Funny how we both went on to become English teachers, something we likely would never have imagined at the time. The Bruce that I knew in high school was always kind, funny, and engaged. I'm sure he was a great teacher who has had a huge impact on the lives of his students.
Depression does not discriminate and its toll is a sad and brutal one on so many. We can choose, though, to remember Bruce through the light and joy he obviously brought to many, many people.

Thinking about you, your family, and Bruce's many friends, colleagues and students.

Dear Nicola and family,

There are simply no words to express the sadness in my heart about Bruce's passing. Though it's been many years since we've connected, his death strikes a deep chord. We all loved & admired him in high school for his humor, intelligence, talent, values and heart. And for being so damn cool.

Thank you for being open about Bruce's battle with Depression. Your honesty and bravery helps others in their struggle with this insidious illness.

I'm so very sorry, Nicola. You and your family are in my thoughts and I'm sending you so much love and strength now. Wishing you peace and light in the days to come.

We are so heart broken and sad for Nicola, Emily, Meg and your families . The loss of Bruce is just tragic for all that knew him. We had the privilege of knowing Bruce through Carolyn and John's many family gatherings. He was always so supporative and proud of not just his own girls but of his nephews and family as well. Mental illness is such a terrible disease that effects so many people in so many families. We hope that Bruce has found peace now and that his family with time can find peace and hope from the many wonderful memories they all have of Bruce. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Very brave of the family to acknowledge depression as the issue. i applaud you for that. It is a nasty condition. To be so giving while dealing with chronic depression speaks volumes about his soul. Im only sorry I didn't know him.
June 9, 2017
I read this obituary; after seeing the photo of such a happy looking man. And then the following words of his bouts with depression tugged at my heart.
Years ago my uncle left us tragically, we didn't know he was also inwardly struggling. To the outside world he was such a happy, helpful person, with 2 young daughters of his own. At that time the cause of his death was covered up...
With your strength and honesty, my hope, like yours I know, is that someone else is able to receive the helping hand they themselves seem so eager to give. I hope your Bruce knew how profound his reach had been to date; these are glowing tributes.

I am very sorry for your loss and I only hope you find some comfort in knowing how loved he was by everyone. I hope he is at peace now and with those that have gone before him.

Mr Buchanan has touched the lives of so very many in the Rundle School community.. many more than I'm sure we can imagine. It is difficult to know what to say or how to say it. Please know that he will be missed by many and that he impacted many lives of young adolescents in these awkward years. Thank you for sharing his battle with depression... I have no doubt that this in itself may help others dealing with this difficult and complex illness.

To the Buchanan family,
This was such sad news for all of us. Mr. Buchanan was Adam's English teacher, as well as his coach for the senior volleyball and soccer teams. Those boys would have gone to the moon and back for Mr. Buchanan, they so admired and respected him. He was such a kind, loving and gentle soul. I can't begin to imagine your loss.
Bless you all...

There simply are no words that can convey how heartbreaking, shocking, and tragic it was to hear this terrible news.

My heart is breaking for you, Nicola, and for your beautiful daughters, Emily and Meg. Your girls will carry on the legacy of their loving and kind-hearted father for generations to come. He will continue to live on through them and also through the memories and experiences that you've shared as a family.

Sincere condolences to both of your families, as well as to your closest childhood friends, many of whom Doug and I attended school with in Edmonton. It is clear that Bruce led a life filled with love and devotion to his family, outdoor adventures and academic and athletic pursuits, and dedication to the many students that he led and mentored over the years. At such an unbearably difficult time, I hope you find solace in the kind words of the many people whose lives Bruce touched, and some comfort in sharing and revisiting the good times that you've shared over the years.

You're in our thoughts and in our hearts as you go through this together. Beyond the clouds, however dark they might be, there is always blue sky.

Dear Nicola,
It was with profound sadness that I heard of Bruce's death. He was one of Russell's favorite teachers and always treated him with fairness and respect, so important as you know when a student's mother works at Rundle College. When working with me in admissions, Bruce was a true professional and he always made parents and prospective students feel welcome and worthy candidates.I can only imagine the grief you and your girls are experiencing. May you remain strong and cherish the memories of a truly kind and generous man.

To the Buchanan family, and Rundle community:

It is with great sadness I am offering my deepest sympathies during this time of insurmountable loss.

With such tragic news, I am overcome with grief, but am also reminded of the wonderful presence our teacher had in the community.

I will never forget passing his room after school hours. He would be in there grading his student's English assignments with Billy Talent playing on full blast... "What a cool teacher", I'd think to myself.

Mr. Buchanan, you were beyond cool. You were a dedicated teacher who became a staple to many of our high school experiences and memories at Rundle. You will forever be missed, and your presence will forever be resounding in our community.

It is with a heavy heart that I am wishing you peace and solace.
