Ivan Johnson

JOHNSON _ Ivan St. Clair January 2, 1926 - August 13, 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan, at the age of 81 years, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Ivan is lovingly remembered by his wife Hilda (Campbell) Johnson; his son Arthur (Carla) Johnson; his daughter Valerie (Barrie) Shibley; and his granddaughters Grace, Abigail, Emily, Jennifer and Samantha; also survived by many friends and relatives in Nova Scotia. Ivan was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Ethel, and his siblings Earl, Simon, Basil and Goldie. Ivan was born in Indian Harbour, N.S., and remained there until he attended Acadia University. He then attended Dalhousie Law School and obtained his LLB in 1954. As a young man he served in the Canadian Army and as a young lawyer he defended Canadian soldiers who served in the Korean War. He began his career in Toronto, Ontario and there he met the love of his life, Hilda Campbell. She introduced him to Sudbury, Ontario where he soon established his law practice. They lived in many locations in Northern Ontario where they raised their two children Arthur and Valerie. When he was fifty-one, always a pioneer, he decided to move the family to Calgary, Alberta in 1977 and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1978. He established his law practice in Northwest Calgary and his daughter Valerie Shibley joined him in the practice of law in 1987, forming the law firm of Johnson & Shibley. He was a simple man with a generous heart, loved by many and felt his life's work was to provide help for those greatest in need. His greatest joy in life was his family and his greatest accomplishments were the many opportunities he gave them. He was always ready to try anything in the outdoors and was an avid golfer, fly fisherman, and hiker. He was an exceptional husband and father and will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Parkinson's Society of Southern Alberta, No. 102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2G 0X5.
