Jack LISTER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2003.
LISTER _ Jack 1918 - 2003 Jack Lister passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family on May 20, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he and his brothers founded Lister Furs in the early 1940s. He earned his diploma at the American Mitchell School of Design in New York City. Between 1942 and 1945 Jack served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He married his wife of fifty-six years, Rose (nee Bercovice), and moved to Calgary where their three children were born and raised. Jack owned and operated Allisters Furriers with stores in Calgary and Lethbridge until the early 1970s. Since then, he was involved in real estate development in Southern Alberta. Jack was an active and proud member of many community organizations, including the Beth Tzedec (formerly Beth Israel) Synagogue, serving as President and on the Board of Directors, B'nai Brith and the Jewish National Fund. He was a member for over fifty years of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA (where he enjoyed much camaraderie). Jack's dedication to community and family was matched by his love of sports. In the early 1950s Jack pitched Senior A Fastball for the Calgary Doodlebugs and B'nai Brith softball teams. He was an avid hockey player and coached minor hockey in the community for many years. He took up handball at the age of fifty-five and played for over twenty years. He was a strong swimmer and golf enthusiast and was an active member of the Willow Park Golf Club. In his later years, Jack managed his real estate interests, remained active in the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, enjoyed his sports and family dinners and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Jack is predeceased by his brothers, Samuel and Simon. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his devoted wife Rose; his children, Ardele Lister of Brooklyn, NY, Bill Lister (Lily) of Calgary, and Caroline Steinberg (Sandon) of Pittsburgh, PA; his grandchildren, Zoe Lister-Jones of NY, Sheena and Zack Lister of Calgary; and two brothers, Meyer of Baltimore, MD and Julius (Gail) of Calgary. Jack gave much of himself in his own quiet way and his unique charm will be greatly missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends. The family wishes to extend gratitude to the loving caregivers that supported Jack in his illness. Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to the Calgary Health Trust - Home Care Palliative Care, 10101 Southport Road S.W., Calgary, T2W 3N2. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, 1325 Glenmore Trail S.W., Calgary, followed by Burial Services at Beth Tzedec Memorial Park, 122 Shalom Way S.W. (Shaughnessy). 037485
