Sonja Kriwonos of Calgary passed away on Friday, October 5, 2012 at the age of 87 years. Beloved mother to Helen (Bill) Derechey of Edmonton, Mary (Mac) McQuarrie of Calgary, James of Calgary, and Peter of Calgary; dear grandmother of Lisa, Margaret, and Colin Brook and Robert Kelly; great-grandmother of Lee, Mason, Lance, Kyle, Keelyn, Tyson, Colton, Megan, Oscar, Joey, and Justice. Sonja also had many close friends. Sonja was born in Kiev, Ukraine and moved with her parents to Stone Podola, Ukraine where she was raised and educated. In 1942, she was captured by the Germans and taken to Cracow, Poland and later to Frankfurt, Germany. In 1944, she married Ivan Kriwonos and in 1950 they came to Canada with their daughter Helen, moving to Lethbridge, Alberta and then later to Calgary, where her second daughter and two sons were born. In 1959, they moved to Smoky Lake, Alberta and farmed. In 1961, they moved to Calgary and resided there since. Sonja was employed as a housekeeper with Foster's Garden Chapel for twenty-two years until retiring in 1985. A Visitation will be held at LEYDEN'S Chapel of Remembrance (corner of 17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at LEYDEN'S Chapel of Remembrance (corner of 17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Queen's Park Cemetery following the Service.
