David Teskey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 22 to Jan. 23, 2011.
TESKEY, David Wayne November 19, 1940 - January 16, 2011 David was born to Phyllis and Ben Teskey on November 19, 1940 at home in Black Diamond, Alberta. He grew up with an older brother Dennis and a little sister Sharon. David left Black Diamond at the age of fifteen to attend Art College in Toronto and SAIT in Calgary. He worked many summers at Chateau Lake Louise in the gardens and the Dining Room. David met Joyce while lodging with her great aunt in Calgary. They were married in 1963 and blessed with a baby girl, Karen in 1967. David left his sales jobs and display job behind to attain a bachelor of Education from the U of C in 1974. He launched his teaching career in Townsville, Australia. Canadian relatives flew over to see the tempting new arrival, Mark. After two years overseas the family returned to Millarville where a third bundle of joy, Paul completed the family. David had a twenty year commute to Calgary. There he moulded countless mischievous youth with art and science lessons at Milton Williams Jr. High School, while growing his Claywest Nurseries business alongside. David's interests were varied, his camera was always at hand. He travelled and painted but retirement never took hold, he was building until the end. David passed away January 16, 2011 at his piano in his home in Millarville. He is survived by his siblings, their spouses, his wife, his children, their spouses, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Lewis Memorial United Church 125 Royal Avenue, Turner Valley. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Diabetes Association (Foothills), 101, 138 - 18 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta T5G 5P9. He had piano lessons and generously shared them with me and encouraged me to play duets with him. Twenty years later were in U of C together and graduated B,Ed, in the same year. He was the brother I never had, a good generous boy, a good man and a loyal friend.

My deepest sympathies to the Teskey family. I had the pleasure of teaching with Dave at Milton Williams and will always fondly remember Dave's stories and sense of humor.
He was so talented in all the things he did.

I taught with Dave for many years at Milton Williams Jr High. Dave was great to work with, outspoken, enthusiastic and he a had a sense of what was right and what was wrong that sometimes got him into trouble. Afterward this would, of course, make for a story that he would tell with great relish.
His many projects (several always on the go) were ambitious and he accomplished many things. Sadly, I'm sure he was not finished yet.
After we left Milton Williams several of the former staff members would meet regularly on Friday afternoons. Dave was an enthusiastic member. He always brought a smile to our faces and will be missed but always remembered.

We were very sad to hear that David had passed away. Over the last 15 years, we had the pleasure of getting to know him. We first got to know Mr. Teskey as he subbed at Holy Trinity Academy. The kids loved him and all of the staff did as well. He had so many great stories and so much to share with all of us. David was one of the most talented, gentle, passionate and compassionate people we've had the pleasure to meet. We made a point of dropping in on a regular basis to stay in touch. We loved hearing all about his travel adventures, listening to him play his piano, drinking lemondade, learning about how to keep flowers alive, viewing his latest paintings, and checking progress on the dome. When we started bow hunting, David invited us onto his land and encouraged us to take two deer with one arrow. David was humble, kind, generous and easily one of the most interesting people that we've known.

Since learning of David's passing, we have been talking to many of the staff and students from Holy Trinity. They all speak so fondly of him. We were blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know David. He was loved by so many; perhaps because he was so willing to share his heart, his hope, and his stories.

Our thoughts and prayers are with David's family and friends. He was so proud of his children and bragged about them often. He always had time for his friends and we all feel a loss with him gone.
God bless.

My heart sank as I read about David's passing. He was a man who in the short snippets that I saw had a great passion for the good in the world. He taught me about the beauty he saw around him, the beauty each flower possesses, the elegance of the birds on his pond. He spoke of the good that was around him. I will be forever grateful for my last time with him as he took me into his home and shared his art, his piano, his plans for his new home and the joy in his heart. May we all take a piece of the lessons he taught and carry them forward.

I was sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I first met Dave at SAIT (Alberta College of Art) and we became close friends. Dave was instrumental in securing employment for me at Chateau Lake Louise where we had many good times.

My deepest sympathy to the Teskey family.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die

Sooo Sorry for your loss

david teskey had a secret.

while he pretended to be a strict disciplinarian, he experienced a stealthy enjoyment of our various daily shenanigans in his 7-17 home room. a teacher through and through, he was also covert in planting the seeds of knowledge which, like his claywest nursery, unknown to us at the time, was the bearer of generations of fruit.

in at least one way, he reminds me of my favorite philosopher, who also spent his career confronting the tension between science and art.

nietzsche's well known aphorism strikes at the heart of mr tesky's spirit:

"a man's maturity consists in having found, once again, the seriousness of a child at play".

long may you run.

As students of Mr. Teskey at Milton Williams Junior High School (30 years ago), we have been reminiscing about our time in his art & science classes. It is evident that as our teacher he brought much more to our young impressionable lives than we realized in 1979! He believed in our abilities (or lack thereof and gently encouraged us or finished our projects!), he brought humor into our classes and as one friend remembered, sharing lunch cleaning out the sinks in the art room was a time of real life and friendship with a creative and distinctive teacher. With our school no longer visible in the city sights, it is a delight to remember some special moments at one of the finest schools in the City of Calgary. We were clearly blessed with a faculty of teachers who were instrumental in our growth and development into fine and highly involved individuals in our city and around the world. Thank you Mr. Teskey for your dedication and for being so real...we honor you in your passing.

Best wishes to the entire Teskey family. Some of my best Milton Williams memories come from Mr. T's humour and patience with those of us who could not draw worth beans. If I had his patience, I'd be a better person.

It's always sad to lose someone however his positive impact on so many student will go on for many years.

I had Mr. Teskey as a home room teacher in 1986 at Milton Williams and always liked walking in every morning and being amazed at the artwork he would have displayed in chalk, and also his amazingly cheery attitude, especially to a bunch of 14 year old brats. A while later I had the chance to know him as David when he would play the piano every now and again at a restaurant in Longview where I was once again fascinated at his humour and zest for everything around him, including his family, as we would catch up during small conversations. His passing truly saddens me however I can't forget how lucky I am to have had the privilege of meeting him during my formative years. My thoughts are with all his family and friends.

Mr. Teskey was my favourite teacher of all the teachers I had over the years—even though the two subjects he taught were my least favourite. Only years later did I realize he made a special effort to teach me a thing or two even though I thought I knew it all. I’ll remember his warmth, humour, kindness and patient persuasiveness.

Dave, the years together at Milton were special and in no small way because of his humour, mischief, honest dedication and perhaps mostly his friendship. I count that time as uniquely special. I am shocked and saddened by his passing.
