Stephen SINGER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Sep. 14 to Sep. 16, 2013.
SINGER, Stephen Wayne
Stephen Wayne Singer was born a third generation Albertan on November 26, 1950 (62 years) and passed away on September 12, 2013 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Stephen is survived by his brother Alan, fiancée Gina Dawson, son Adam and daughters Quinn and Carly. He was predeceased by his father Jack and mother Shirley (Cohen). Stephen attended Beverly Hills High and Chadwick School in Los Angeles and studied at the University of Calgary. Following university he opened the iconic and original Moose Factory in 1975, a restaurant and lounge with style and taste unique to Calgary at the time and set the standard for many restaurants to follow. Stephen went on to work in the family real estate business, United Management. He also partnered with his brother Alan in Alsten Holdings and Hollywood Center Studios in Los Angeles. Stephen along with Alan, made a major donation to the Jack Singer Concert Hall in honour of their father. Nothing was more important to Stephen than his family and friends. He was a great father. He spent every spare moment interacting in every aspect of his children's lives. He took great interest in their development and always stressed the importance of furthering their education. He was a great friend. His friendships were based upon loyalty and trust. Once a friend, always a friend. In his later years, Stephen was wholly committed to a healthy lifestyle of fitness and nutrition.
His second family at INLIV Full Circle Health will miss him. Funeral Services will be held at Beth Tzedec Synagogue (1325 Glenmore Trail S.W.) today, September 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a burial at Queen's Park Cemetery. A celebration of life will
follow the burial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Chinook Hospice, 1261 Glenmore Trail S.W., Calgary, Alberta T2V 4Y8 (Telephone 403-252-0141). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Arrangements in care of the CHEVRA KADISHA OF CALGARY. Phone: 403-244-4717.

Im so sorry to hear of Stephens passing. I only learned about it through an acquaintance, when I attended my first husbands funeral last week.
I worked for Stephen at the Moose Factory and he was a kind and fair boss. I have many fond memories of working for Stephen and he made the Moose Factory a great place to be.
Im so sad that a great man was taken so soon. Rest well Stephan, you will be missed.

Dear Alan, from the bottom of my heart I am so sad for you, losing your brother this soon, in the prime of his life, and right after your beloved father. My sincere condolences to Stephen's children, those he loved, and the many friends who loved him, too. Back in the old days, Steve worked so hard to create the historical Moose Factory, which became a favorite Calgary haunt in the '70s; beginning as a wonderful coffee house, Steve turned it into an elegant restaurant and piano lounge, with his artistic attention to every detail. The last time I saw his happy face was in 1983 when he showed me his new car and told me about the beautiful girl he was getting married to in California... many years ago! He was a lovely man...R.I.P. old friend.
Much love, Neesja

I knew Stephen in the 1990's. In pretty much every conversation we had, Stephen would share some memory or story about his children and Susan. He was so proud of his children and spoke so fondly of his early years with Susan. Stephen was such a gentle spirit; loving, forgiving and non judgemental. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so very sad to hear that Stephen passed. My time spent at the Moose, the friendships I made, the fun and unusual experiences there were all because of Stephen. He was a lovely man in every way. That was a great time in my life full of wonderful memories. Throughout the years when I would pop in for a visit he was always so welcoming. I last saw him and Jack in 2009 and I will treasure that visit forever. My condolences to Stephen's children, Alan, Susan and family. Fondly remembered, Brenda

It is not easy to break through the sorrowfully tragic wall of premature passing; but the sensitive, humourous and loving tribute prepared and presented by Stephen's family were a powerful healing tool and spoke highly of the gift he left us with -- amazing kids and wonderful, wonderful memories.
