David DEAN Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jul. 21 to Jul. 22, 2016.
DEAN, David Ralph
January 29, 1924 - July 17, 2016
David (Dave) Dean, resident of Calgary, died peacefully with his wife of 72 years at his side on July 17, 2016 at the age of 92 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Dorothy Dean; children: Rae Douglas, John Dean (Judy MacLachlan), Deborah Dean (Don Sucha), Bob Dean; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren (one more imminently arriving) and close family friend Jeanne Watson. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Dean and son-in-law Paul Douglas. Dave was born in Brixham, Devon, England and when he was four years old his family moved to Saskatchewan, settling near Hanley. He lived on the farm and attended Bell Rock School and Hanley High School. He left Hanley at age 18 and moved to Saskatoon where he met the love of his life, Dorothy, when they were both working at the Bank of Nova Scotia. They married in Saskatoon on March 15, 1944 and Dave went overseas in April 1944, serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, Dave returned to Dorothy and Saskatoon where he attended the University of Saskatchewan, completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool till 1954 when he went to work for the Co-op. While working at the Co-op the family moved to Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Kindersley and Swift Current. In 1961 Dave began working for Investors Group in Yorkton, moving to Calgary in 1968. After retirement Dave and Dorothy enjoyed travelling to England and Cuba as well as across Canada. Dave had a great appreciation for the visual arts, being a photographer and painter in oils and watercolours, a stamp collector and model railroader, as well as a dedicated gardener. He was also known for playing a mean harmonica. The family has many wonderful memories of fishing and camping trips as well as Sunday drives and he took good care of everyone. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time at home visiting with the family. In accordance with Dave's wish, there will be no service. There will be a private family gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Lung Association Alberta & NWT. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of David Dean, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
