Louis L. "Sonny" Harris, Jr.

Corpus Christi, TX

Louis "Sonny" L. Harris, Jr. passed away Friday, July 6, 2018 at the age of 89. Sonny will be remembered as a loving husband, respected businessman and devoted father. He was born December 8, 1928 and was adopted and raised by Louis Lum Harris ("L. L." Harris, Sr.) and Minnie Harris in Corpus Christi, TX. He graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1947, where he was voted Most Handsome! After some university time at Schreiner University, he went on to serve honorably with the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed in California, Hawaii, Japan, and fought in the Korean War at the Chosin Reservoir. He was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United National Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Award.

He married Ruth ("Niki") Knox Harris on June 21, 1958. They lived in Corpus Christi where Sonny first worked for his father, and then ran the L.L. Harris Wholesale Grocery Company for over thirty years. He was a faithful church attendee and loved the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was one of the founding members of the Corpus Christi Town Club and was a member of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club.

Sonny was a sweet and generous man with a huge heart. He quietly made numerous donations and helped countless men and women down on their luck. He even saved a young woman from drowning one summer at Padre Island. They stayed in touch for almost seventy years. Throughout his life he enjoyed water skiing, hunting, fishing, furniture building, and being with close and cherished friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Knox Harris, his sister, Margarete Reifschlager, his mother, Minnie Harris, and father, L. L. Harris, Sr.

Sonny is survived by his two daughters: Lynn (Larry) Hartnett of Portland, Texas and Susan Clinton of Fairhope, Alabama as well as five grandchildren: Marshall Wilkerson (Sara), Christopher Clinton, Caroline Clinton, Catherine Clinton and Bryan Hartnett.

A celebration of Sonny's life will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Saturday, July 14th at 10:00 am with burial to follow at Seaside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Church of the Good Shepherd, or the .
