Rockport, TX

Mike passed in peace, August 21, 2018 at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas Freeman and Margaret Kalmar.

Mike was born on May 13th, 1943 in Ada, Oklahoma. After graduating from Ada High School, he attended OU and graduated with a BA in History in 1965. Mike spent his entire professional career with JCPenney in management and retired at the age of 56 to follow his true passion of fishing in Rockport, TX.

Mike leaves behind his loving wife Patricia A. Freeman, two sons, Michael Freeman (Donna) of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Chris Freeman (Ericka) of Allen, Texas, four grandsons, Patrick, Grant, Luke and Jack Freeman, two stepsons, Ryan Smith and Eric McBride, one step grandson, Bowen Smith, younger siblings, Danny Freeman of Sasakwa Okla, half brother, Nick Kalmar, half sister Okie Davidson, half sister, Peggy West of Ada, Ok, as well as several cousins, including very dear cousin, Doug Fleet of Estes Park, CO, his faithful, lifelong best friend Joe Lee Walker of Ada, OK and his former wife, Monte Phelps Custer, the mother of his two children.

Most who knew Mike can relate well to the prayer Patricia asked to have included here, as we collectively reflect on the spirited life of the husband, dad, friend and grandad, we all love and will dearly miss...

The Fisherman's prayer:

"I pray that I may live to fish

Until my dying day.

And when it comes to my last cast,

I then most humbly pray:

And peacefully asleep

That in His mercy I be judged

Big enough to keep."

We have no doubt that Mike is a keeper!

The immediate family would like to thank all of the close friends, family and neighbors who helped Mike during his fight with cancer for the past two years. Your time, kindness and selfless actions have not gone unnoticed and we can't thank you enough.
