Toni Lee Stephens, 70, of Lapeer, Mich., formerly of Evergreen, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 7, 2018, after a 10-year battle with lung cancer.
Toni was born Jan. 15, 1948, in Detroit to the late David and Jean (Hyner) Stephens. She owned and operated American Family Insurance in Evergreen before returning to Michigan four years ago.
Always a positive person with a heart of gold, Toni had a kind word for everyone, and she was a friend to people and animals alike. In keeping true to her life's passion, she made sure all of her animals had new homes before she left for hers.
Her illness didn't stop her from participating in volunteer organizations. In Evergreen, Toni was active in Evergreen Rotary and each year helped park cars and replenished water for runners in the Freedom Run every July 4. She was an active volunteer with Pan Equus Animal Sanctuary (PEAS) in Oxford, Mich., and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer.
There wasn't ever anything Toni couldn't handle. She ran her ranches in Evergreen and Michigan by herself. She was tenacious, stubborn and generous.
Toni enjoyed skiing, and was an avid golfer with a hole-in-one last September at Lapeer Country Club.
She was a singer and guitarist, joining in an Evergreen jam session weekly for many years.
Toni is survived by her brothers: David (Janet), Thomas, Mark (Edna), Scott and Daryl (Jennifer). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and the amazing neighbors and friends who helped care for her.
A celebration of Toni's life will take place Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer, Mich.
Memorial contributions to honor and celebrate Toni's life may be made to the Pan Equus Animal Sanctuary (PEAS)
