Dennis F. Broderick

WEST HARWICH — Dennis F. Broderick, 88, died peacefully on Nov. 3, 2007 at Epoch Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Harwich after a brief illness.

He was born July 24, 1919 in Lynn, the son of Patrick and Bridget Broderick. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and enrolled in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He married Barbara Cole in 1950 and raised a family in Stoneham. Dennis was employed for 40 years by the General Electric Company in Lynn where he was an active union member.

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus in Stoneham and after retiring to his summer home in West Harwich in 1982, continued with the Knights of Columbus #7312, until his death.

Dennis was a lifelong ham radio operator; his call sign was N1BQY. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich and was an usher at Sunday Mass for many years. His hobbies included gardening, sports and baking bread. Most of all, Dennis loved to tinker. He could find a use for any piece of wood, metal or PVC pipe. You name it - he would make it into something useful. He loved the company of his neighbors. Dennis was proud of his Irish heritage and his extended family.

Dennis was preceded in death by his daughter, Claire; his wife of 39 years, Barbara; and his daughter, Ruth Smith. He is survived by his sister, Eileen Mason of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; son, Dennis F. Broderick Jr. of Stoughton; his daughters, Jane and her husband John Varkonda of Edgartown, Susan Broderick and her husband Michael Sarney of Plymouth; and his grandchildren, Greg Smith of Quincy, and Adian and Kasey Varkonda of Edgartown.

Services for Dennis will begin with a visiting hour at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at the Coutinho-Boisse Funeral Home, 678 Main St., Harwich, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, Route 28, West Harwich. A graveside service will be held at Lindewood Cemetery in Stoneham on Tuesday Nov. 13, at 1 p.m.
