Edith Bacon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 6 to Jul. 7, 2005.
BACON - Edith N., of Sherborn, died on July 1 at her home in Hyannis Port after a long battle with cancer. She was 50. Mrs. Bacon was an artist who worked in oils and pen and ink prior to her illness and was known for her landscapes and portraits which adorn the walls of many houses in the Boston area. After being diagnosed with cancer, she spent so much time undergoing so many different treatments, both in the United States and abroad that she gradually became a renowned expert on how to cope with the disease and the bewildering array of treatment options that patients are now facing. She was a friend to countless strangers who sought her out for advice and were rewarded with her no nonsense, analytical approach to a frightening subject. She first contracted the disease in 1993, shortly after the birth of her fifth child but was able to be a friend and companion to her children and husband in spite of challenging disabilities for twelve more years. Her sense of humor, strength of character and personal modesty were her defining qualities. Mrs. Bacon, known as Edie, was the daughter of two Bostonians, the late John Noble and Barbara Warner. She was born in New York City and spent her childhood in Beirut, Lebanon, where her father was employed. She later attended the Brearley School in New York and graduated from the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut and from Boston University where she was enrolled in the School of Fine Arts. After graduation from Boston University, Mrs. Bacon resided in Charlestown until marrying Carter Bacon, a Boston attorney, in 1981. In 1982, the couple moved to Sherborn, where they have resided ever since. The Bacons are also part of the summer community of Hyannis Port, on Cape Cod, where Mrs. Bacon enjoyed sailing and playing golf and served, as she did in Sherborn and Boston, as an inspiration to everyone with whom she came in contact. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bacon leaves a daughter, Elizabeth, and four sons, Carter, Nathaniel, Peter and Samuel, all of Sherborn; three brothers, John Noble of Boston, Christopher Noble of Marion and George Noble of Manchester-by-the-Sea and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 8, at Pilgrim Church in Sherborn. A private burial ceremony will be held in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Sam and Family

I was so sorry to hear of your Mothers passing Sam. I know i only knew you from Young Guns Lax camp but you stood out right away because you are a funny guy. I can only imagine what an amazing person your mom is, because i met you and you had an instant impact on me, trust me im not easy to impress.

Keep the good times and the happy memories in your heart and the pain will be easier to bare. Nothing i can say can make you feel better, but just know that you are in my thoughts and with a great family to support you you're gonna be, in the great words of Quagmire, "giggity giggity awww right."

I have been thinking of a very particular memory of sitting on a big, smooth rock on the beach at Harbor Island, with the sun beating down and the taste of salt in the air. I could not have been more that six or seven. It is one of those lazy moments that last forever - I on the rock and my best friend and playmate sunning herself beside me.

Your mom (and wife, Bink) was one of the first people that I remember loving, outside of my mother and father, and I always felt a special closeness with her. I share, albeit in a comparably small way, your loss and grief at her passing. The image of that day is captured in a photograph, but it is more permanently embedded in my memory and in my heart. My heart goes out to you. Love Johnny.
