Harriet Dickson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2010.
SOUTH ORLEANS — Harriet (Brigham) Dickson, 93, of South Orleans, died peacefully at her daughter's home in Shelburne Falls on Thursday, June 24, 2010, after living with Alzheimer's for several years.

Born in Boston on Dec. 8, 1916, the daughter of F. Gorham and Helen Brigham, she grew up in Chestnut Hill, graduating from Winsor School and Bennington College, and in her 60s received her master's degree in special education from Lesley College.

After marrying William A. Dickson of Weston in 1941 and living in various states while he completed his service in the Army as a physician, they settled in Jamaica Plain before moving to Milton and, in semi-retirement, finally moved to South Orleans in 1973.

She was an avid volunteer, sharing her time and talents with a multitude of groups over the years. Once on the Cape, she enjoyed tutoring children with learning disabilities and raised money for the Audubon Bird Sanctuary in Wellfleet. She loved nature and all of its creatures and worked to conserve land for their protection. Her biggest passion was her family and her beloved friends.

Harriet is survived by her husband, William, of South Orleans; and a brother, F. Gorham Brigham Jr., and his wife Amy of West Newton. She leaves behind four children and their spouses: Pat and Ellen Dickson of Leyden, Pete and Rachel Dickson of Freeport, Maine, Tom and MaryJane Dickson of Sconset, and Joanie Dickson and her partner Dave Hopkins of Shelburne Falls; plus six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 320 Boston Post Road, Weston.

Her family requests that any memorial donations be made in her honor to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, P.O. Box 236, South Wellfleet, MA 02663.

Dear Dicksons all:
Memories of 75 Canton Ave, sliding down the bannister, playing card games at the Schuss, skiing Wildcat Mountain, and hanging up wet bathing suits after a Pleasant Bay swim all include visions of Mrs. D. and her steady, kind, and creative presence.
With love,
All the Quinbys

The many memories and experiences I have had with Aunt Harriet will always be near and dear to my heart. Aunt Harriet shared her love of nature and our natural environment with me . Aunt Harriet made us very aware of our surroundings. I will never forget our trips in the yellow Vega to the Wellfleet Audubon Society or the time she took me to see the movie Star Wars. Her patience and compassion helped me in my struggle with dyslexia. I always looked forward to her yearly Christmas gift of the subscription to Ranger Rick. magazine. I am looking forward to passing down some of her beautifully handmade gifts to my son. Spending time with her and Uncle Bill in Orleans were some of the highlights of my childhood.

She will be greatly missed but always remembered fondly.

Dear Joanie,

Your mother was indeed fortunate to have such a caring daughter to look after her in her later years. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Joanie
Having lost my mother last year at this time, I can sympathize with how you surely are feeling. My mother suffered in a similar way to yours. I admire you for having her with you in the end. She must have been an amazing person.

Dear Joanie,

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to know your mother personally, but I think of her whenever I think of or visit the Wellfleet Bay sanctuary, and like to imagine that a part of her spirit will always be there. Her contributions to that wonderful place are such a great and lasting gift to all of us. You, Dave, and Bill will be in my thoughts as you remember her.
