Louis Trilsch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2008.
SANDWICH — Louis A. Trilsch, of Sandwich, a daily luncheon fixture for many years at the Daniel Webster Inn, passed away Aug. 10, 2008, at his home in the company of his wife, Yvonne, family and his beloved dog.

He was born on July 20, 1924, in Whitestone, N.Y., the son of William and Lillian (Snyder) Trilsch. As a youth, he recalled seeing the Zeppelin Hindenburg pass overhead on the May day in 1937 in which it would later catch fire in Lakehurst, N.J.

He attended Manhasset, N.Y., public schools and graduated from The Taft School in 1942. His college career at Wesleyan University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, was interrupted by World War II and he entered the Army Air Forces, and was assigned to the 13th Emergency Rescue Boat Squadron of the 13th Air Force in the Pacific. Upon his discharge, he completed his studies and graduated from Babson College. While a student, he met his first wife, Joy Vanderhoof, a Wellesley College student, and they were married in 1949. She predeceased him.

Lou then began a career in advertising, starting first with Life Magazine and for the next 40 years with Conde Nast Publications. From 1955 through his retirement in 1989, he was New England sales manager for Glamour Magazine. He was a former governor of the Lantern Club of Boston.

He also enjoyed travels throughout various regions of the country, the Caribbean and Europe with his wife, Yvonne, whom he married in 1977. This love of travel began when as a small boy of 10 he first traveled by steamer around the Caribbean with his grandfather, visiting Havana and viewing the Panama Canal. With his parents and older brother Robert, who predeceased him, they would travel by train or motor car from Manhasset Harbor, at the time the northern terminus of Pan American Airlines and their flying boat service, on vacations to Dinner Key, the southern terminal in Miami and watch the Pan Am flights land on Biscayne Bay. He also recalled viewing the destruction to the Florida Keys caused by the devastating hurricane of 1935.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Guillotte) (Kelley); his children, Heidi Trilsch of St. Petersburg, Fla., Peter V. Trilsch of Ramrod Key, Fla., David F. Kelley of Fitchburg, Bridget Nafranowicz of Pembroke, N.H., Jonathan P. Kelley of Harvard, and Aileen P. Kelley of Boston; and three grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Donations may be made in Lou's memory to MSPCA-Angell, 350 S. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.
