Peter Kirwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2010.
NORTH FALMOUTH — Peter Damian Kirwin, 67, accompanied by all the prayers of the church, died at his home on April 23, 2010. The cause was pancreatic cancer. Born on February 23, 1943, in Albany, N.Y., to the late Arthur R. and Arlene Dwyer Kirwin, Peter is survived by his beloved children, Zachary Arthur Kirwin and Aileen Coakley Kirwin; by his two brothers Arthur R. Kirwin, Houston, Texas, and John D. Kirwin, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and his brother-in-law Robert J. Krackeler, Menands, N.Y., and many nieces, nephews, great-nephews and nieces; many good friends and colleagues, in particular Barbara Ahalt and Pam Brighton. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Christine K. Krackeler.

Peter was a graduate of Vincentian Institute, Albany, N.Y., St. Anselm College, and Boston University School of Social Work. He served as a volunteer with the Catholic Church Extension Society, followed by two years in the United States Army.

In 2008, he retired after 25 years as Director of Human Services for the Town of Falmouth. Prior to that, he was Director of Catholic Charities on Cape Cod. He spent four years as Adjustment Counselor for the Sandwich Schools. His first position on the Cape was with the predecessor of FAIRWINDS. On April 11, 2010, the FAIRWINDS Center was named in his honor. In his long tenure as Director of Falmouth Human Services, Peter was actively engaged in starting, promoting and encouraging affordable housing, social services of all kinds, and the Falmouth Service Center. Peter worked for many years with Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital. He had a private counseling practice for twenty years. He loved all his work and he sorely missed it after retirement and his subsequent illness.

Peter served on the Falmouth School Board and was active in Democratic state and local politics, especially with the Falmouth Town Meeting, and was recently honored as a founder of the Falmouth Education Foundation.

At his request, Peter's body has been donated to Boston University, Department of Neurology and Anatomy.

In lieu of flowers, Peter requested that ongoing relief efforts in Haiti be supported or Partners in Health, P. O. Box 845578, Boston, MA 02284-5578.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 840 Sandwich Road, East Falmouth, on April 28, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the Falmouth Jewish Congregation.

Dear Art, John, Ailee and Zachary,
I knew Peter when he came to the University of Oklahoma Newman Center following a test run in the seminary. He, John Link and I roomed together in a house owned by the Newman Center that we painted in exchange for rent. He visited our home in Oklahoma City on several occasions and went to California with my twin brother, Mike, in the summer of 1965 (I think). Since those days, we managed to see one another several times, and keep up with the activities of our respective families. Our get togethers were too infrequent to nuture the friendship that we formed at OU.

My memories of Peter will always be positive. I know that he devoted his life to helping those in need, but the Peter I knew was always a model of energy, tolerance, humor, irreverence and cheerfulness. He showed an amazing openness and warmth to people and they reciprocated. Like all of us, I know he had some rough times in his life, but when we visited with each other, he was joyful and fun-loving. I only wish he could have lived long enough to know his friends in their golden years. I am sure we will all miss him until it is our turn to join him.

On behalf of my wife, Barbara, and I, please accept our heartfelt sympathy for your loss. We are happy that you were all able to be there to care from him at the end.

Peter will be missed by so many people.
He was a wonderful person who cared deeply about all people. He came to Cape Cod to work for ARC/Cape Cod and started the first independent living program for people with disabilities. He brought his many talents and caring traits to help so many people and their families. His passing is a great loss to our community and his family. He was one of my most respected colleagues and Emily and I will miss him. He made the world a better place! Our deepest sympathy to his family.

We were SO saddened to hear of Peter's passing and send our sincerest condolences to his fine family. Over 30+ years we have known Peter via my brother George Frisk and his family who live next door to Peter's. We know what a caring and generous soul Peter was and have fond memories of our visit last summer when we were fortunate to have visited with Peter, Ailey and Zach on a fun a picnic together. He will be missed all who knew him.

April 27, 2010

I had the priviledge of meeting and spending time with Peter on just two occasions but remember feeling that I had known him forever....he had a special warm way about him.

His passing will definitely leave a huge void but I know that his children and family will find comfort in their wonderful memories of him.

Peter was a dear man devoted to improving the human condition with whom I worked for many years during the time I was the Director of Cape Cod Human Services and the Center for Individual and Family Services of Cape Cod. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death today from my wife. I work in Maine and comute home to Cape Cod on the weekends. As they say he walked the talk.He will be missed by all and the human services community on Cape Cod and those we served.

We should all be so blessed to be surrounded in the final year of our life by children such as Zach and Ailey Kirwin. By putting their own lives on hold to come home and take care of their father, they remind us all--those who knew Peter and those who did not--of the better angels of our nature. May all that they have given so selflessly--tender mercies, blessings, humor and grace-follow them for the rest of their lives.

To the Kirwin Family:
I was very saddened to learn of Peter's passing. I went thru St Teresa's and VI with him and always enjoyed his sense of humor and upbeat personality. Unfortunately, as so often happens, we lose contact with some of our friends. I am not familiar with his life after school but I also hope it was a good one - as I'm sure it was since he was such a fine gentleman. My deepest sympathies to his family on their loss.

Dear Art + John,

Today I learned of Peter's birth to eternal life, and I see him as a college student on Mercer Street in Albany in 1964 with Daddy Art, Sister Chris, and Mother Arlene all holding each other and smiling joyfully in Jesus' presence.
God bless us all, everyone! Stanton Boteler

To Peter's family,
I went through St. Teresa's and VI with Peter and I have
such fond memories of him and his family. We will be having our 50th Reunion this year and I was hoping to
see him there. What a marvelous sense of humor he always had. I hope he had a good life.
I am so sorry for your loss and will be looking for the
