Robert Herlihy Obituary

WEYMOUTH — Robert A. Herlihy, of Weymouth, died Aug. 30, 2008, after a lengthy illness, at the Southwood Nursing Home in Norwell.

He was 84 years of age and was raised and educated in Cambridge. He lived in Weymouth for 54 years.

He retired in 1985 after working 38 years as a telecommunications specialist for the telephone companies. During World War II, he served in the Navy as an electricians mate. He served on the USS Baron and the USS Mellette. He was also a past commander of the East Weymouth VFW Post No. 1399.

He was the beloved husband of the late Alice L. (Nice) Herlihy; devoted father of Kathleen Herlihy of Marshfield, Daniel J. Herlihy of Mashpee, Robert A. Herlihy Jr. of Marshfield, Thomas C. Herlihy of Quincy, and the late Patricia Ann Jacques. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home in South Weymouth, at 809 Main St. (Route 18 opposite South Shore Hospital), Friday, at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Albert the Great Church, East Weymouth, at 9 a.m. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment is at Fairmount Cemetery in Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445-7226.
