Robert Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 26, 2008.
WEST YARMOUTH — Robert E. Martin, 94, of West Yarmouth, entered into everlasting peace on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at his daughter's home in Brewster, surrounded by the love and care of his family.

He was the husband of the late Mary "My Mary" E. (Twohig) Martin, who died in 2001.

Born, raised and educated in New Orleans, La., Mr. Martin was a graduate of Holy Name Prep School, and he received a bachelor's degree from Loyola University, where he competed in football and competed against Jesse Owens in track.

Mr. Martin served in the Army during World War II with the 99th Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific and European theaters, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, and three Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant in 1945.

A longtime executive of the Texaco Corp., Mr. Martin lived in Longmeadow and summered in West Yarmouth before moving there permanently when he retired.

An avid golfer, Mr. Martin played with pro Tom Watson at the Pro-Am Tournament at Pleasant Valley in Sutton. He will be missed by his dear golf buddies, Curt Shaw, John Trotter and Patrick Fahy, who enjoyed Bob's occasional "hole-in-one," "shooting his age," and "winning of the quarters."

Mr. Martin is survived by three daughters, Ellen L. Brassard and her husband, Paul, of Framingham and Harwich Port, Barbara E. Rockett and her husband, C. Edward, of Framingham, and Lenore A. Lauro of Brewster and her friend George Glassanos of New York; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathan, Kate, Kyle, Julie, Melissa, Tracy, Adam, Michael and Gregory; eight great-grandchildren, Bradley, Samantha, Lauren, Madison, Joshua, Sidney, Jessica and Katie; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary E. Mason.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, in St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St., Hyannis.

Interment will be private.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

In lieu of flowers, and with heartfelt thanks, memorial donations may be made to Epoch Hospice, 111 Headwaters Drive, Harwich, MA 02645.
