Dr. Robert F. Tilley

SOUTH YARMOUTH — Dr. Robert F. Tilley of South Yarmouth died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. He was the husband of Jane A. (St. Martin) Tilley.

Born and raised in Boston, Dr. Tilley was educated in the Boston public schools. He graduated from Boston College and received its Rale Medallion in 1976; Tufts Medical School, and the University of Virginia.

A veteran of World War II, Dr. Tilley served in the Marine Corps from 1938 to 1941, and then in the Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

Dr. Tilley was a dermatologist on the staff of Mass. General Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, New England Deaconess Hospital and Faulkner Hospital. He was also an instructor at Harvard Medical School and was affiliated with the health department at MIT and Harvard. He practiced dermatology until his retirement in 1987.

A member of the American Medical Association, Dr. Tilley was a 50-year member of the Mass. Medical Society and served as assistant treasurer for 32 years. He was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, a past president of the New England Dermatological Society and the Norfolk District Medical Society.

Dr. Tilley moved to Yarmouthport in 1978 from Boston and then to South Yarmouth in 2005.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Tilley is survived by many nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Lamoureux and her husband, Michael, Roberta Ann Leonardi, Elaine Pafalo and her husband, Michael, James Tilley Jr. and his wife, Fran, Richard Tilley and his wife, Anne, Arthur Tilley Jr. and his wife, Jane, Michael Tilley and his wife, Josette, Carol Sutton-Oldetowski and Frederick Tilley; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. Pius X Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Yarmouth Board of Health and the Yarmouth Historical Commission. He enjoyed photography and gardening.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visitation will precede the Mass, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
