Roger Wilkey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2009.
DENNIS — Roger Alan Wilkey Jr., 48, of Dennis, died on Feb. 28, 2009, at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, after a brave battle with colon cancer.

A 12th-generation Cape Codder, he was the son of Marylyn Brough and the late Roger Wilkey, and the stepson of the late Allen Brough, all of Dennis.

While attending Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Roger was an exceptional cross-country runner, earning two Boston Globe All-Scholastic awards and, in his senior year, the Eastern Mass. Division III state title.

He worked in construction on the Cape for many years, doing gutter replacement, roofing, and painting. Roger also worked as a preschool teacher.

A talented artist, Roger was an accomplished bluegrass musician who played the guitar and banjo. He first played with his uncle, Hank Wilkey, and the "Upper County Homesteaders." He later played with "The Remaynes" and then in a duo called "Spin Dry." He had recently lived in Tennessee to pursue his interest in music and made many friends while there.

He is survived by his daughter, Aliana Wilkey of Centerville. He also leaves his close friend, Jean Sagara of Wellfleet; a brother, Gary Wilkey of Spanaway, Wash.; six sisters, Doreen Roberts of West Valley, Utah, Sandra Wilkey-Gaus and Samantha Ellis of Yarmouth, Laura Lowe of Waterboro, Maine, Sharon Wilkey of Barnstable, and Valerie Wilkey-Farrell of Dennis; and two stepsisters, Dawn King and Cindy Maskell, both of Dennis. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Route 6A, Brewster.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, 02601.

Roger was a part of my life at D-Y as a runner and a friend from 1974 through 1978. Although I have not seen him in a while, he has always been one that comes to mind as I think back on my high school running (and social) days. Since then, whenever I did see him around town, he always had a sincere happiness about him with added excitement to find out what was going on with me. I was shocked to hear of his passing and regret not being there to support him with his battle. I will always remember Roger for his unique sense of humor and concern for others. Man.........he could run!!!

Uncle Butch,
I love you and I will miss you forever. Your and Uncle Hank’s music was a wonderful inspiration for me, and I am glad you can be together again. You amazed people here with your music, and there is no doubt that you are now amazing angels in heaven. You were a great uncle, and you put up a courageous fight. You had to leave, but you will always be in all of our hearts. I love you. Rest in Peace!

I Miss You! Your Niece, Caleigh

I really miss you dad. You will always be my greatest hero. I wish I could see you again. I love you so much, and I really hope you're able to watch over me... I want you to see my grow up, because I know that you would always be proud. I'm so grateful for anybody who's shared memories with my dad. It's been really hard, but like he always said, "Keep Smiling."

Roger,

I am so thankful for the sovereignty of God. I almost didn't get to meet you and play music with you. Who knew you had such little time left with us but Him? I know you are in good hands now and am so glad for the memories of Christmas 2008. I hope we all have a Martin in heaven waiting for us...............Love, N

Butch,
I will always remember all the fun times we had as kids: like building snow tunnels & caves, playing king of the mountain, and inspecting bugs. Your smile and your kind heart will not be forgotten. I miss you but will see you again someday. I am looking forward to hearing you play music in heaven with Dad and Uncle Hank. I love you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was good friends with Roger back in the early nineties. We played many hours of music together. I have many of recordings of him with other musicians and myself just jamming to his songs. I have some great stuff of he and the late, great sax player, Billy Shea. I've been listening to him all evening on my recordings and recalling many great times together. He was a very gentle soul and always willing to help a friend in need. He helped me on many projects around my home. Thanks for the cherished memories, Roger. Godspeed.

First of all, I want to express my heartfelt sympathy to the entire family!

My name is Robin Feckner and my maiden name was Robin Saretsky. When I was younger and lived on the Cape, I was friends with the entire family and hung out quite a bit. Mr. & Mrs. Brough ALWAYS made me feel like part of the family.

I vividly remember a time when my Mother came to pick me up. Roger was moving dirt from one area to another sweating away while Tex was telling my Mother how HE was moving the dirt and doing such a swell job when all of a sudden we heard Roger in the back saying "Who is moving the dirt?!" Tex just winked as all of us were laughing!

Hopefully, Roger isn't moving any dirt piles up in heaven!
