Albert Polk Obituary

POLK III, ALBERT SIDNEY On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, "Bert" died peacefully in his sleep at Anne Arundel Medical Center due to complications from aggressive cancer. Born May 10, 1944 to Albert S. Polk, Jr. and Mary Anna Sutch Polk of Baltimore. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Kathleen Kirwan Krehnbrink Polk, sons Andrew Ford Polk (Carrie) of Chesapeake Beach, MD and Thomas Benjamin Polk (Jeanine), of Newark, DE; five grandchildren Natalie Joy Polk, April Lily Polk, Ryan William Polk, Chase Benjamin Polk and Sadie Katherine Polk. He is also survived by his sister Mary Anne Polk O'Meara (John) of Moorestown, NJ as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children. Bert attended the Gilman School and graduated from Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine in 1963. In 1967 he graduated from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee with a BS degree. In 1984, he graduated from Marymount University, Arlington, Virginia with a Master's in Business Administration. He was commissioned Naval Officer February 9, 1968 in Pensacola, Florida. He received his wings on April 11, 1969 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was attached to VAW-121 on the USS WASP flying the E-1B "Willy Fudd." Other duties included VAW-120 training and flying E-2B, E-2C "Hawkeye"; VAW-126 USS Constellation; Human Resources Management, BUPERS, Washington, DC; Executive Asst. to Command and Control Director, Pentagon, Washington, DC; VAW-115 USS Midway, Yokosuka, Japan; Deputy Director Naval Weapons Support Activity, NAVWESA; Safety Department Head, USS Midway, Yokosuka, Japan; Safety Director, NAVAIR, Crystal City; Armed Forces Inaugural Committee for George Herbert Walker Bush and Dan Quayle. He retired from the military and worked as a logistics engineer in safety support systems for LME, Inc., Annapolis, Maryland. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Meritorious Service Medal. He was an avid writer and newsletter writer. He received commendation for numerous articles published including APPROACH magazine. He was an active member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Annapolis; past president and member of the Grachur Club on the Magothy River; Beta Theta Pi, Theta Chi Chapter, Podickory Point Yacht Club; Podickory Point Community Association, and the Magothy River Sailing Association. Everyone appreciated his warm sense of humor and generous spirit. Family, friends, and faith were his cornerstones. Friends may visit at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 8th, from 5-7pm. There will be a memorial celebration of his life at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, July 9th at 11am. with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in his memory may be made to the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee or the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
