Howard Pinskey Obituary

Howard Samuel Pinskey from Annapolis, a successful businessman and a pillar of the community passed away on Sunday, January 31 st with his family by his side. He was 81. Howard was raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and became an Eagle Scout at the conservative Temple Israel. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (electrical). He served on active duty and in the Navy Reserve for 21 years, retiring in 1983 with the rank of Commander. Howard's professional career has been primarily in the fast-food restaurant business and in real estate development. Since 1983, he has been involved in all aspects of the restaurant business having been associated with over 47 food establishments. Howard was a Vice President of the Taubman Company, a nationwide premier shopping center development company, and in the development of a 250-room luxury retail and hotel complex in Charleston, South Carolina. Additionally, he has owned, developed and constructed office, commercial and residential locations in Maryland and Florida, most notably, Ann's Dari-Crème, a Maryland fixture for over 70 years. Howard was a member and past President of the Annapolis Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners, Board Member of Congregation Kneseth Israel for over 20 years and a member of the Jewish War Veterans, often using his 1970 Jeep for their group in the Annapolis Memorial Day parade. Howard is the founding President and Board Member of the Friends of the Jewish Chapel (FOJC), an organization that planned, developed and raised funds for the construction of the Commodore Uriah P. Levy Center and Jewish Chapel on the grounds of the Naval Academy. He is the only USNA Class Secretary of the Naval Academy to serve as Secretary for over 60 years. A fixture in Annapolis since 1983, his larger than life personality and booming voice made him one of a kind and always remembered, whether at a local restaurant or at Nordstrom; everyone knew Howard and everyone remembered Howard. Howard was the ultimate Navy football fan and could often be heard shouting from his box on the 50 yard line "GO NAVY". Howard is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Fannie Pinskey. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Thea, his sister Raleigh Pinskey, his nieces Cindy Siesel, Amy Applestein (Brian) and Stacy Frazier (Dwayne) and his beloved great nieces and nephew, Jaclyn, Bridget, Tori, Karli and Logan. A private family service will be held at the Uriah P. Levy Center and Jewish Chapel with interment at the Naval Academy Columbarium. I hope this is read by the family. I´m sorry I haven´t been in touch for so many years. Last time I saw Cousin Howard I was in enlisted in the Navy. He had gotten me into the Naval Academy and I turned it down (That wasn´t the smartest thing I´ve ever done!) Would love to connect with the family again. This is Alan Slabodkin and I can be reached at [email protected]

I've worked for howard for 38 years. He was generous, caring and treated us girls with respect and compassion. He would work with us, he was so much fun. I will miss him so much. There is no way to replace him. Great men like howard are impossible to replace. He was not just my boss, he was my friend and I adored him. My heart is broken, he was loved and I miss his daily text and phone calls but i know i will see him again.

Genuine, caring, and solid are the most fitting words I would use to describe my friend Howard. Many times he was also serious yet comical and wore his heart on his sleeve. An all-around great man that had a passion for life, concern for his country and was always engaged at whatever task at hand. There is no doubt that his presence will be missed. Always good conversations paired with a few laughs. Am glad I got to mèet him on my journey through Life. Rest easy and May God bless you my friend.

I have not been in touch with Howard since he left Scranton for Annapolis. But he was such a vibrant member of our community throughout his life there that I never forgot him. He "owned" readership of the first chapter of the Megillah every Purim and when he was ready to retire from that post I was honored to be the one he taught it to. The legacy was duly handed down by me to younger generations, as Howard instructed me. When plans were being made for a reunion of people who grew up Jewish in Scranton, he was one of the most enthusiastic responders. I was so looking forward to seeing him at the upcoming 100th anniversary events for his home base, Scranton Temple Israel and the Scranton Jewish community. May his memory be for a blessing for all who knew him.

A great classmate and friend. He never seemed to have a bad day and always lifted the spirits of those around him. He will be missed by so many who held him in highest regard. Though not a Marine, he was still Semper Fidelis! RIP Comrade.

We knew Howie from attending Navy football games with my mom and dad, Yolanda and Bill Heine.
Howie was in the box next door, he was ALWAYS so kind and caring. He made you feel like a long lost friend, forever smiling and enjoying life. Howie was a joy to be around, I looked forward to seeing him at the games. He will be terribly missed, our deepest condolences to his family.

Howard; may his memory be for a blessing. Larger than life, a smile that would always light up a room, his devotion and love for his family and friends, his faith and commitment to making the world a kinder place, and a work ethic that inspired all who knew him. You will be sorely missed.

Howard was that rare individual who had many fine attributes that benefited his family, friends, the City of Annapolis, the United States Naval Academy, the U.S. Navy, his employees, his Temple, and his neighbors. He was a giant! Howard, you will sorely be missed. We were blessed to have been his friends.

. I have lost one of my oldest and dearest friends who I've known for approximately 75 years. Howard and I grow up together in Scranton, Pa. I was even a baby sitter for his sister, Raleigh. I believe it was my father, Jerry Parker, who was responsible for both of us getting appoints to the Naval Academy. While Howie attended the Academy, I was commissioned from Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. We both served on active duty in different capacities. We spoke at least several times a month although our lives went in different directions. Howie's untimely passing leaves a huge hole in my heart but also wonderful memories. My condolences to the entire family

I have known Howard for 45 years typing his Article for the SHIPMATE Magazine. I feel privileged to have known such a wonderful loving and caring man. Never heard a cross word from him. Had a beautiful personality and never let anything bring him down. For those who know Howard you know exactly what I’m saying. To know him was to love him. Thea I know your heart is broken and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Until we meet again, Rest In Peace Howard.

Baruch Dayan Emet. We are filled with sorrow to hear about Howard's passing. We are privileged to have met him numerous times at USNA's Chapel. Such a loving and gifted man. He was exemplary and a true model of humanity for our daughter, a mid who had the opportunity to be under his wing. Such a painful loss.
