Irving Ruby Obituary



Irving Jack Ruby, 99, of Sykesville, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at Fairhaven in Sykesville.

Born Dec. 19, 1913, in Sykesville, he was one of 10 children born to Irving and Jennie Ruby. He was the husband of Ella May Aist Ruby for 70 years until she died on Dec. 30, 2010.

He was a graduate of Sykesville High School and Western Maryland College. He worked at Springfield Hospital for 36 years and served as the head of the laboratory retiring in 1976.

He was a Christian and a lifetime member of Wesley Chapel, now Wesley Freedom UMC, where he taught adult Sunday school, served as treasurer and was head of Old Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

He won local and Atlantic trophies for horseshoes and bowling with Sykesville leagues. He took up golf in his later years.

He was a collector of rocks and minerals and local artifacts. He shared his knowledge of area Indian tribes and local farm life yearly to fifth-grade students at Freedom Elementary School.

Surviving are daughters Barbara and husband Nelson Miles, Brenda and husband Phil Werner, and Bonnie and husband Gene Smith; sisters Virginia Ruby Maskell and Betty Ruby Cook and husband Marion; sister-in-law Jean Ruby; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family and friends.

He was predeceased by his brothers Irving Eli Ruby, Victor Ruby and Thomas Ruby, and by his sisters Madge Williams, Ardell Ruby, Ester McRay, and Lillie Myers.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church, 961 Johnsville Road, Eldersburg. Interment in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.

The family will receive friends at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville on 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Holy Trinity Cemetery, c/o Elain Breeding, 6550 Mellor Rd., Sykesville, MD 21784, or to Old Wesley Chapel Cemetery, c/o Glenn Maskell, 5350 Irving Ruby Rd., Sykesville, MD 21784 or to the charity of your choice.

"Jack" was my first boss when I finished school and worked in the lab at SHC. He taught me so much more than my job. I will alwyas remember him as a wonderful and knowledgeable person.
