Albert L. Younger IV, 64, of Westminster, died Thursday, May 31, 2012, at home.
Born March 13, 1948, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Albert L. Younger III and Stella Sheckles Younger; and was the foster son of the late Francis de Paul and Mary Whitehurst. He was the husband of Wanda H. Younger.
He was a contractor, dog trainer and breeder of German Shepherds for many years. After being diagnosed with cancer seven years ago, he turned his full attention to dog training and breeding German Shepherds.
He especially enjoyed having two of his Shepherds perform on stage at the Kennedy Center with Placido Domingo in nine Wagner operas, where he was listed as the dog trainer for the Washington National Opera and the Kennedy Center.
He enjoyed teaching children in 4-H to train their dogs and watching the children become successful and self-confident. He would remind the children to be patient and practice.
He enjoyed his work and found enjoyment in working with the dogs and their handlers at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore and seeing the dogs become more competent at obedience and drug and bomb detection work.
He enjoyed volunteering with the 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program. In addition, he liked helping deliver puppies.
He had articles written about him in the Carroll County Times, the Baltimore Gazette, and Carroll Magazine.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sister and brother-in-law Althea and James Furbay, of Littlestown, Pa.; nieces and nephews; stepsons and daughters-in-law Eddie and Monica Calwell, of Westminster, and Jeffrey and Daria Calwell, of Columbia; and a granddaughter, Kylie Rose Calwell, of Westminster.
Per his request, his body is being donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

With all that's going on in the world today seeing Al's wonderful smile and spending just a moment with him would make my day so much brighter. Certain places and times I will think of Al and remember what a wonderful person he was. He lives on in my heart.

For most of my young childhood...Al was my step father. He taught me many lessons that I think of and rely on to this very day. I just drove by his house last week for a strange feeling told me to do so. Now I fear I know the reason for that feeling. I didn't get to say goodbye and had sparse contact with him over the last 15 years. Much love and good energy thoughts to his wife.

I feel so priviledged to have known Al and had the chance to see him in action with dogs and kids. I have never had any interaction with Al that didn't have me leave smiling and feeling happier than before I saw him. His dogs are some of the most beautiful and impressive creatures I have ever seen. I will never forget Fritzie coming into the office and how huge he was but so obedient and so devoted to Al. I have never known anyone with more love and delight in life. I will miss him terribly.

So sorry to lose Al. He was a great dog breeder and trainer who helped improve both owners and their dogs. Harvy, my von Braven dog, is the best tempered, most handsome, nost intelligent, and most obedient of the four German Shepherds I've 0owned over the years. Al leaves a great legacy. And, what a nice person he was! He will be so missed.

Wanda, We are so very sorry for your loss. We loved "Mr. Al". He meant so much to the girls. They looked up to him and always looked forward to coming to work with him and their dogs. He was always straight forward with the girls and they respected and loved him.
I will never forget when he let Kait work with Fritz at the fair. She felt so important and special. That made her feel like a million bucks.
He taught them things that they will never forget about confidence, competence, perseverance, and pride in hard work and accomplishment. He also showed them about doing what you love to do.
He definitely had a gift and he will terribly be missed.

Mr. Al will be missed by many. We have had the honor to know him as a trainer and friend. His knowledge about german shepherds and the love he had for his dogs was clear to anyone who knew him. The field will not be the same without him. Wanda our thoughts are with you and your family.

Wanda,
So sad to see the news. Al sure fought hard and savored his time with you, the dogs and all the people he helped. I'll miss bumping into him at Classico - but I'll look for you.

My deepest and sincere sympathy. Al Younger was a person who gave so much of himself to everyone he met, no matter how well he knew you, no matter what you had to offer him in return. He was a great help to me and my family. God Bless

Wanda my heart goes out to you. We've met but I dont know if you remember me. Al did a number of jobs around our house and I would often run into him at HomeDepot. Please call me if there is anything I can do.
If I there is one thing I could say to Al I'd say thank for all the smiles, and enthusiasiam for life that you shared. You could make a bad day good just by seeing that twinkle in your eyes. I will truly miss you.

Al will be truly missed. He was a wonderful volunteer and supporter of the 4-H program, both with dog training and helping at the Therapeutic Riding Program. He did a lot of work on the building when we were working on and transitioning into it. I will miss talking dogs and horses with him!
