Adelheid "Heidi" Maleski

Adelheid "Heidi" Maleski, 88, of Mount Airy, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at home, of complications following brain cancer.

Born May 11, 1925, in Oshersleben, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Dorette Bode Bothmann. She was the wife of Chester M. Maleski, who died Nov. 30, 2004.

She was the youngest of nine children.

She was employed at the former Scholl's Cafeteria in Washington, D.C., when she first immigrated to America. Later she was employed at Geico Insurance Company as an underwriter. Her dream job was being the owner, with her husband, of Heidi's Gift Shop in Mount Airy from 1980 to 2000, when they both retired. The shop was known for a joyful atmosphere and good conversation, along with the interesting items sold there.

She attended St. John's Catholic Church in Frederick and St. Michael's Catholic Church of Popular Springs.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara M. Fishell, of Ijamsville; granddaughter Regina A. O'Rourke and husband Evan, and their children Brendan, Kaitlin and McKenzie, of New Market; a step-grandson, John C. Fishell, of Indiana; a stepson, Douglas M. Maleski Sr. and wife Jodi, and their children Douglas M. Maleski Jr. and wife Saja, stationed in Japan, and Brandi and husband David Donohue and family; a sister, Hedwig Helfrich, of Einbeck, Germany, and her children Ingrid and husband Gerd Helfrich-Beraniak and family, Renate and husband Gerhard Grundle and family, and Peter and wife Marlene Myer; nieces Heti and husband Herbert Ehrich and family, and Ingrid and husband Keith Jenkins and family; nephew Carl and wife Sue Peiers and family; the Maleski and Hartman families, of Pennsylvania; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1125 St. Michael's Road, Poplar Springs. Interment will commence at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.
