Alden William "Shaf" Shaffer Sr., age 84, of Lineboro, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Carroll Hospital Center. Born March 2, 1934 in Uniontown, he was the son of the late Milton Eugene and Emma Ruth Smith Shaffer. He was the husband of Betty Jane Blacksten Shaffer who died in 2006. Mr. Shaffer was employed with Carroll County Roads Department for 41 years, from 1958 - 1999. He was a former member of Manchester Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Surviving are children, Mary Witte and husband James and Alden W. Shaffer Jr. and wife Gwen, all of Taneytown and Clifton T. Smith and wife Ellen of Pamona, MO; 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Eckenrode and husband Bernie of Finksburg and Evelyn Miller and husband Gene of Westminster and brother, Wayne Shaffer of Hagerstown. He was predeceased by a grandson, James R. Witte; sisters, Arneda Eckenrode and Jean Harris Stonesifer and brothers, Garland and Derwood Shaffer. A funeral service will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10 with Rev. Garry Sheaffer, of MorningStar Family Church, Thurmont, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Uniontown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 9. Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
