Alfred Cookson Yingling, 96, of Westminster, died Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2012, at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 19, 1915, on the family farm in Pleasant Valley, he was the son of the late C. Tobias and Ruth Nusbaum Yingling. He was the husband of Eunice Bowman Yingling, his wife of 72 years.

He served most of his career as a senior metallurgist for the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. After his retirement, he and his wife lived in Orlando, Fla., for 20 years before they returned to Westminster for the remainder of his life.

He was an avid fan of all sports, especially football and the Washington Redskins. He enjoyed Hoffman's Ice Cream and Yuengling beer.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters and son-in-law Donna and Clifton Hilderley, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Sharon K. Yingling, of Rockville; son and daughter-in-law Larry Alfred and Sherry Yingling, of Topsail Beach, N.C.; and a grandson, Christian R. Yingling, of Washington, D.C.

He was predeceased by brothers David, Loring and Dennis Yingling; and a sister, Mary Hosfeld.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gerald Fuss officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
