Years after retirement, his family was informed he bailed people out of jail without taking their money, and giving clients money to feed their children.

He liked to hunt in Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake, and called Garrett County his second home. He also spent many deer seasons in Rangley Lake, Maine. In 1995, he was president of Lewistown Volunteer Fire Department. He coached Thurmont Little League in the 1970s, was an NRA member and life member of Central Sportsman Club of Frederick County.
