Arnold Karl Gebhardt, 80, of Winfield, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at  home.

Born June 14, 1932, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Arno Karl and Katherine Hanstein Gebhardt. He was the husband of Hedwig Martha Gruber Gebhardt, who died Aug. 13, 2012.

He received his Bachelor of Commercial Science degree from Benjamin Franklin University in June 1952. He then served in the Army as a corporal. After his service in the Army he worked for "Ma Bell" as a cable splicer and retired from Verizon after 37 years.

He was an avid rail fan, especially steam engines. He liked gardening and was known for his large and productive vegetable gardens, fruit trees and berries. He enjoyed history, maps and animals.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Erich and Jenny Gebhardt, of Winfield; daughters and sons-in-law Margaret Taylor, and Heidi and Dave Oswald, all of Winfield, and Katie and Gary Heiges, of Sykesville; a brother, Irwin Gebhardt, of Winfield; sister and brother-in-law Betty and William Cox, of Trenton, Fla.; grandchildren Tina Myers, Cory Heiges, Marissa Heiges, Shelby Gebhardt, Brooke Gebhardt and Dillon Oswald; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Harper Myers.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
