Barbara Jean "BJ" Chase, 90, a resident of Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, MD and formerly of Fishkill, NY passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House. Born in Ossining, NY on July 11, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ralph J. and Ellice H. (Oakley) Schoonmaker. She was the wife of Charles "Chuck" Gardner Chase whom she married in 1948. Mrs. Chase was a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany, where she was recognized as a Distinguished Alumna in 2005. She was very active with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. She worked as the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Dutchess County, NY. She served as director of Camp Sakajawea and was a life member of the Girl Scouts of USA. She directed courses for Wood Badge candidates for the Boy Scouts of America. She was also active with the Dutchess County Civic Ballet Company. While living at Carroll Lutheran Village, BJ was active with the Friends of the Village and the quilting group. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Chase is survived by children and spouses, James Chase (Barbara Collins) of Sykesville, MD; Ellice Chase (Dr. Robert Young) of Katonah, NY; Anthony Chase (Javier Bustillos) of Buffalo, NY and Barbara E. Chase (Craig Kunaschk) of Los Angeles, CA; brother R. Thomas Schoonmaker (Ann Vigilante) of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Ian and Matthew Young, Charles and Edward Collins-Chase and Chase and Clare Kunaschk. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, James O. Schoonmaker. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Krug Chapel of Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD. at 2 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service. Cremation arrangements handled by Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel. Internment of her ashes will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, in Fishkill, New York, the town in which she raised her family and where she was prominent in civic affairs for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Carroll Lutheran Village Residents' Assistance Fund, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158.
