Barbara Spaulding Alexander, 81, of Westminster, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House in Westminster, following an extended illness.
Born Nov. 25, 1930, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Beatrice Spaulding. She was the wife of Karl Russell Alexander Jr., her husband of 59 years.
She grew up in Ivanhoe, Va. She was a 1951 graduate of Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va., with a Bachelor of Science in education. She also attended Columbia University, obtaining a degree in physical therapy. After raising her four sons, she was a physical therapist practicing in Carroll County for 20 years.
She was a member of the Westminster United Methodist Church and volunteered on the REACH committee. She was a member of the Westminster Garden Club.
She enjoyed gardening, traveling, golf and orchestrating life experiences for her family and friends, most especially for her grandchildren at G/G Camp (Grandmother/Grandad Camp) for six years.
She volunteered for numerous organizations including the Carroll Arts Council, Carroll Hospice, and she helped organize the Community Concerts Association.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons Karl Russell Alexander III and wife Mary Dupre, of Philadelphia, Richard Brian Alexander and wife Marguerite, of Ellicott City, David William Alexander and wife Patricia, of Lineboro, and John Edward Alexander and wife Kay, of Westminster; granddaughters Jessica Alexander Daily and husband William, of Raleigh, N.C., Erin Victoria Alexander, of Baltimore, Tanya Marie Kerr and husband Shawn, of Westminster, Bailey Lynn Alexander, of Catonsville, and Caroline Elizabeth Alexander, of Ellicott City; grandsons Daniel Jason Alexander, of Charleston, S.C., and Clayton Philip Alexander, of Ellicott City; great-grandsons Connor James and Liam Alexander Daily, of Raleigh, and Mason David and Aiden Nikolaus Kerr, of Westminster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Glenna Spaulding Sawyers; and a brother Charles W. Spaulding Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Carroll Lutheran Village, Weller's Great Room, 1000 Weller Circle, Westminster.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Kathy Altman officiating.
Per her wishes, she donated her body to science.
