Bette Jane Kroop Wooden, 92, passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 11, 2017. She was born the only child to Effie Mae Amspacher and Maurice Kroop on August 25, 1924 in York, PA. Bette graduated from Westminster High School in 1941 and was still dear friends with her classmates. On May 7, 1942, she married Philip W. Wooden of Woodensburg, MD and together they raised five children in their home outside of Westminster MD. Bette had a successful career with a cosmetic company but her real joy was her home and her garden. In 1981, she was widowed and in 1986 she moved to San Diego, CA to enjoy shared passions with her oldest daughter. Bette spent years deep in genealogy research, pulling her car over every time she found a new cemetery. As a cancer survivor, Bette devoted years volunteering with the American Cancer Society in MD, and in CA she became certified in the Reach to Recovery program to provide comfort and guidance to cancer patients. She also volunteered with the Salvation Army; both organizations meant a great deal to her. Bette loved to paint and sew and when she moved to California she became a member of the Bonita Art Guild where she had the opportunity to display and sell her artwork. In June, Bette moved back east to live with her daughter's family in New York where she got to see snow again. She leaves behind her five children and two amazing son-in-laws who provided comfort and happiness: Terri J. Bettencourt of San Diego CA; Christina M. Wooden and husband Raymond Virta of Tappan NY; Amy Wooden Dobbs and husband Harold Dobbs of Chantilly VA; Laury Wooden of Brooklyn NY; Robert Scott Wooden and wife Patricia of New Windsor MD; four grandchildren: Michael Stickles, Westminster MD; Lauren Dobbs, Melbourne Australia; Rebecca Chin, Seattle WA; Olivia Virta, Tappan NY; and one great grandson. Bette was a member of the Nestor Methodist Church in San Diego and will be buried in Mt Gilead Methodist cemetery in Woodensburg, MD next to her husband Philip.
