Betty Jean Garber, age 86, of Union Bridge, died Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Carroll Hospital Center. Born August 11, 1930 in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ida Pauline Long Stambaugh. She was the wife of Maurice E. Garber, who died in 1987. Mrs. Garber was a graduate of Walkersville High School. She was formerly employed with Hartz Sewing Factory, Union Bridge and then with SERRV International Gift Shop, New Windsor, retiring at age 70. She was a member of St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church, New Windsor. She was an avid reader, loved spending time on her deck just enjoying nature and loved gardening, even pulling weeds. She was a beautiful seamstress, enjoyed sewing and crocheting and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. Surviving are three daughters, Kathy Jeanne Smock and husband, David of Hurlock, Karen Diane Cooke of Taneytown and Karla Lyne Bowen and husband Michael of Westminster; grandchildren, Marisa Elizabeth Cooke of Eldersburg, Benjamin Ross Cooke and Hannah Rose Cooke, both of Taneytown, Marco Xavier Warthen and Tristan Conner Ellis Maher, both of Westminster; brothers, Sterling, Samuel "Dick", Larry "Bill" and Rodney Stambaugh; sister, Joyce Stitely; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Violet E. Smith, R.E. Carlean Buffington and Dolly Stambaugh; and brothers, Harold and Virgil Stambaugh. The family will receive friends at Hartzler funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge on Friday, August 4 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August. 5 at 10 a.m. Rev. Anne Durboraw, her pastor, will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Purple Heart, P.O.
