Betty Jane Hare Wright, 87, of Lunenburg County, Va., died Thursday, May 24, 2012, in Farmville, Va.

Born December 30, 1924, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Anna Cramer Hare. She was the wife of the late Oliver L. Wright Jr., her husband of 47 years.

Surviving are sister Elvia Utz and husband Elwood, of Hanover, Pa.; children Oliver L. Wright III and wife Susan of Lunenburg County, Va., Rebecca Wright Brizee and husband Harry, of Annandale, Va.; son-in-law Raymond L. Petro and wife Angela, of Williamsburg, Va.; grandchildren and great grandchildren Nicholas Petro and wife Colleen and daughter, Rowan, of Sandston, Va., Abigail Hasson Rawlins and husband Steve and their children, Ella, Steven and Violet of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Alexis Petro, of Richmond, Va.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and other family members.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Jane Wright Petro.

She was a long time member of the Victoria United Methodist Church and active in numerous church and civic organizations through the years. In Carroll County, she was the leader of the Melrose 4-H club and a Maryland 4-H All Star, honored for her work with youth.

She worked as an Activities Director in a retirement home in Washington County and with a federal employment program for rural senior citizens in central Virginia. She was the host mother to many exchange students from around the country and the world, including South Africa, Scotland and Chile.

She was known for her caring of others, her warm smile, and strong faith. She touched many lives in positive and extraordinary ways.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Victoria United Methodist Church, 1906 Lee Avenue, Victoria, Va., 23974, with a fellowship luncheon to follow. Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
