On November 14, 2014, Charles Richard (Dick) Masters, 89, passed on at the Homewood Retirement Community in Williamsport, MD. Born in Smithsburg, MD on July 19, 1925, he was the son of Charles D. and Beulah (Kinsey) Masters. Dick attended Smithsburg High School, enlisting in the US Navy after graduation in 1943. He attended Midshipmen's School and was commissioned as Ensign, serving aboard ships in the South Pacific. Following the war, Dick attended Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, receiving a BA degree. Feeling a call to the ministry and with support of his home congregation at Cavetown (MD) United Church of Christ, he enrolled in Lancaster (PA) Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree and was later awarded a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained into the United Church of Christ in May, 1951 at his home church in Cavetown. Dick met his wife, Anita (Mann) Masters while serving as a student pastor in her home church in Doylestown, PA during his senior year of seminary. They were married on September 8, 1951. Dick's first pastorate, where he spent 3 years, was in Woodcock Valley in central Pennsylvania. He then served as minister at St. John's United Church of Christ in Bellefonte, PA for the next 9 years. He moved to Hagerstown in 1964 to assume the pastorate of Church of the Holy Trinity United Church of Christ where he served for the next 26 years. He was preceded in death by his twin grandchildren Christian Andrew and Meredith Claire Masters. He is survived by his wife Anita at Homewood Retirement Center at Williamsport, two sons, Gordon Richard and wife Linda Kirkpatrick of Westminster, MD and Philip Allen and wife Rebecca of Hershey, PA; brother J. Terry Masters and wife Linda, Hagerstown, MD; grandson Benjamin Masters of Boston, MA; four step-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew. Services will be held on Thursday November 20, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Holy Trinity 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, with the Rev. Marilyn Washburn and Rev. Don Stevenson officiating.Family will receive friends on Wednesday November 19, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.Private interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, MD.
