Carl DeWitt Harris, 87, of Westminster, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 peacefully at home. Born June 21, 1928 in Cranberry Valley, off Sullivan Rd, Westminster, Md. He was the son of John William and Mamie Marie Miller Harris. He was the husband of Helen Louise Beard Harris whom he married July 30, 1955. He attended Manchester High School and left school to help on the family farm. In January 1952 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was sent to Germany where he then served in the 43rd Infantry Division and Heavy Equipment Co. He was honorably discharged in December 1953. He was a Life Member of Local 467 of the VFW, and American Legion Post 31 and several other organizations. He was hired at Black & Decker in Hampstead in the Shipping Department in January 1954 and retired as the Supervisor with 30 years service. During that time he completed his high school education. He then worked for Westminster Woodworking and did many odd carpentry jobs including remodeling his son's 100+ year old farm house. He also worked for Dutterer's Florist. Carl and his family spent 38 years at their summer home near Harper's Ferry, WV along the Potomac River and enjoyed hunting, water skiing, boating, fishing and had many cookouts and parties with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, driving his 1989 Ford truck, working in his garden and mowing his lawn. He enjoyed traveling and cruising, dancing and watching the Orioles and Ravens. Carl is a member of St. John's Leister's Lutheran Church and has enjoyed bowling on the church league, ushering at the 8 AM service and attending the Men's Group. Carl is survived by his wife, Helen (Suz), and son, Randy Carl Harris of Westminster, grandchildren Carli Harris Swift and Brandon Michael Harris, great-grandchildren Austin Michael Harris, Mae Rose Swift and John Bryan Swift, and a step grandson and two step great-granddaughters. He is survived by sister-in-law Irene (Reenie) Harris, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and many special friends. He is pre-deceased by son Bryan DeWitt Harris who died June 19, 2008. He is also pre-deceased by brothers John Francis Harris, Luther Roy Harris, Robert Allen Harris, and David Eugene Harris, and sisters Betty May Hunter, Martha Virginia Stem, and Janet Marie Massicot Stewart. The family has requested there be no viewing. There will be a private service and burial at St. John's Lutheran Church at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. John's Leister's Lutheran Church, 827 Leister's Church Rd., Westminster, Md. 21157 or Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, Md.
