Carol Elizabeth Hackney, of Eldersburg, MD, passed away on August 29, 2014. She was born in Baltimore, MD July 19, 1928. The daughter of Judge H. Hamilton Hackney and his wife Alice Smith Hackney, she grew up on the family farm, Cold Saturday, in Finksburg, MD where her parents raised pure bred Aberdeen Angus cattle. Throughout her life she was an active participant in agriculture and livestock management. Upon graduation from Garrison Forest School in 1946 she spent a year at Western Maryland College then transferred to Iowa State University where she earned a degree in animal husbandry. She joined the family cattle operation participating in breeding, marketing, and sales. The cattle sold throughout the eastern United States and as far south as Jamaica. For many years she was Secretary of the Eastern Aberdeen-Angus Association. In later years Miss Hackney lived on her own small farm in Eldersburg raising Morgan horses, including her beloved stallion, Blarney Stone and her world champion mare, Bambury Cross. She was an advocate of agricultural land preservation and served on the board of the Carroll County Land Trust for many years. She had her own farm, referred to as Bennett-Kelly, put on the National Register of Historic Places and placed under a land trust easement as well. She was passionate about animal welfare, serving on the board of the Carroll County Humane Society and was involved in many small animal and horse rescues. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Reisterstown, MD, for more than 70 years, supporting the church and volunteering in many capacities, in particular organizing the annual Red Cross blood drive. Survivors include a sister, Alice Hackney Altstatt, M.D. of Finksburg, MD, brothers, H. Hamilton Hackney (Mary) of Lutherville, MD, George Edgar Hackney (Eden) of Tucson, AZ, and eight nephews and nieces: Leslie Boyd Altstatt (Tomoko), of Long Beach, CA, Alice Louise Altstatt of Finksburg, MD, Carol Eunice Altstatt of Silver Spring, MD, Julia Altstatt Kasdorf (Lynn) of Waterford, VA, Hamilton Smith Altstatt (Pamela) of Seneca, SC, Robin Altstatt Scarborough, D.V.M.
