Charles H. Baughman, 97, of Hanover, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Hanover Hospital following a brief hospitalization.

Born Nov. 7, 1916, in Lineboro, he was the oldest son of the late James H. and Treva Shaffer Baughman. He was the husband of the late Anna Baugher Baughman, his wife of 60 years, who died in 2007.

He attended Manchester High School and worked on several farms as a young man. At the age of 40, he was invited to work alongside a carpenter friend and quickly found he enjoyed woodworking and the artistry of carpentry. He was employed as a finishing carpenter for companies that built in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas.

A lifetime deacon of the Hanover Church of the Brethren, he was actively involved in many aspects of the church. He taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and served as the deacon chairman, as assistant Sunday school superintendent and as a church board member.

His work ethic kept him busy outside of the home but he also found moments at home, growing flowers and vegetables in his garden, and enjoying time with his family.

Surviving are daughters Betsy Hoffer and fiance Joseph Carolus, of York, Pa., and Jane Luquette and husband Dennis, of York Springs, Pa.; grandchildren Laura Smith and husband Jeremy, Joseph Luquette, Andrea Luquette and Julie Hoffer; a great-grandson, Luke Smith; a brother, James Baughman Jr., of New Oxford, Pa.; sister Anna May Witter and husband Samuel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a stillborn daughter; a brother, Clarence Baughman Sr.; and a sister, Catherine Palmer.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Saturday, at Hanover Church of the Brethren, 601 Wilson Ave., Hanover, with the Rev. Geraldine Godfrey officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Meadow Branch Cemetery in  Westminster.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Children's Aid Society, 343 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, PA 17350.

Arrangements are being handled by Panebaker Funeral Home in Hanover.
