Charles Ivan Miller, 85, of Manchester, Md, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2016 after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 31, 1930 in Millers, Md, the son of H. Walter Miller and Ella Lippy Miller. He was the husband of Betty Lou Yelton Miller for over 60 years. Upon graduation from Manchester High School in 1947 he enlisted in the US Army and went to Japan in 1949. He served in Korea during the Korean War 1950-51. He graduated for Officers Candidate School in 1955, Artillery Officers Advance School in 1961, from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1963, and from various other military schools. He served in Vietnam during the Advisory Campaign in 1964-65. He served in Germany for 6 -1/2 years during the Cold War and in Turkey with NATO in 1970-71. He retired from the army January 1, 1972 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His awards and decorations include The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal w/OLC, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Korea and Vietnam Service Medals, Presidential Unit Citation, The Parachutist Badge and the Combat Infantrymen's Badge. After retirement from the Army he was active in various professional, community and veterans' organizations. He is a past president of the Carroll County Board of Realtors, past president of the Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club, a Lions Club Zone Chairman, and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He served on the Carroll County Recreation and Parks Board for 6 years; the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross for Carroll County and the Baltimore Region for over 10 years. He was elected to the State Democratic Central Committee and has served on the Manchester War Memorial Committee and the Maryland Veterans Commission. He was a member of VFW Post 467, American Region Post 200, and DAV Chapter 22. He was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America, AUSA, NAUS, the Combat Infantrymen's Association and the Field Artillery Association. He was an Elder of Kirkridge Presbyterian Church in Manchester. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Wayne D and daughter-in-law Cathy, Dwight E and Mark S, all of the Manchester area; grandchildren Gregory, Joshua, Matthew and Hannah; great-grandchildren Astoria Rose and Steven Lambert; sisters Lois Neumann of Hanover, PA and Helen Dickens of Hampstead, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Louella, Ruthetta, Evelyn, Pauline, Ethel; brothers George Henry, Herbert Eugene and Walter Jr; and daughter-in-law Alesia (Sissy) Miller. The family will receive friends Thursday September 1 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Dr, Manchester, Md. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Kirkridge Presbyterian Church at 2236 Old Fort Schoolhouse Rd, Hampstead MD with his pastor Steven Badorf officiating. Interment will be at Kirkridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Kirkridge Presbyterian Church, PO Box 773, Manchester, MD 21102.
