Charles Matthew Sweeney, 81, of Mount Airy, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at home.

Born April 19, 1932, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Erma Brown Sweeney. He was the husband of the late Betty Sweeney, his wife of 51 years.

He served in the Army 77th Field Artillery 1st Cavalry during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 191 in Mount Airy.

Surviving are children David Sweeney and wife Mary, of Middletown, Sharon Goad-Bolanos and husband Alberto, of Mount Airy, and Sheila Joyce, of Waynesboro, Pa.; grandchildren Aislinn, Matthew, Robert, Sharon, Michael and Christina; sisters Shirley Walker, and Kathleen Krofchik and husband Michael; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas L. Sweeney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
